  • Mission:
  • Assistance League of Los Angeles is 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to improving the prospects and quality of life for impoverished children and families throughout Los Angeles County. Programs remove barriers to education, boost self-esteem and give children living in poverty the tools and opportunities they need to live independent, meaningful and fulfilling lives.

  • Overview:
  • Assistance League of Los Angeles offers core five community services geared toward uplifting the lives of children in poverty:

1.) Operation School Bell and its mobile counterpart Operation School Bell on Wheels, provide impoverished, homeless and foster children ages 5-11 in the Los Angeles Unified School District with school uniforms, supplies, shoes, warm winter jackets and backpacks so that they may focus on their studies and reach their full potential academically. Annually, Operation School Bell removes basic barriers to school attendance and academic success for roughly 5,000 young students.

    2) Foster Children’s Resource Center is based in the San Fernando Valley and provides foster children with emergency clothing and supplies that give them a fresh start and bolster their self-esteem during a vulnerable time. Most of these children are in the custody of the Department of Children and Family Services due to abuse or neglect. Each year, Foster Children Resource Center serves upwards of 1,500 foster children in the San Fernando Valley region of Los Angeles.

3.) Hollywood Children’s Club expands on the success of Foster Children’s Resource Center to serve children from Assistance League’s Hollywood based programs, provides emergency clothing and supplies to impoverished, homeless and foster children in Hollywood and the surrounding areas. Launched in 2013, Hollywood Children’s Club is on track to serve 200 foster children, homeless children and transition aged youth in 2014 and double offerings in the upcoming year.

4.) Early Childhood Education instills math, science, technology, literary, social and life skills that prepare children for school and a successful future, making kids more likely to do better in school, attend college and less likely to engage in criminal behavior. Each year, this nationally accredited program prepares 480 children for kindergarten and beyond.

5.) Assistance League Theatre for Children provides live musicals based on classic children’s literature that allow homeless, impoverished and foster children to experience the magic and wonder of the arts, many for the first time. Since 1929, the Theatre has brought enrichment to 12,500 children annually.

  • History:
  • Assistance League of Los Angeles, formerly known as Assistance League of Southern California, was founded in 1919 as a 501c3 non-profit organization to assist veterans in Los Angeles returning from World War I. In response to the escalating poverty rate and myriad challenges facing impoverished children, who now constitute nearly 28% of all children in Los Angeles, the League's mission has evolved to improving the life prospects for children in poverty through early childhood education, school uniforms and supplies for impoverished, homeless and foster children, and enrichment through live theatre.
