General

  • Mission:
  • Asian Human Services began helping South East Asian refugees more than 34 years ago and the organization has retained its single purpose: to positively transform lives among Chicago’s immigrants, refugees, and other under-served communities.

  • Overview:
  • When immigrants and refugees arrive to live in Chicago, they often have nowhere to turn. AHS provides a familial safety net that helps the city’s neediest individuals and families become thriving members of our community. Fluent in more than 25 languages and familiar with just as many cultures, AHS staff and volunteers guide their underserved clients through every facet – both simple and complex – of succeeding in their new home.

One of the first steps in that life is physical well-being. At the AHS Family Health Center, clients have access to preventative care – mammograms, prostate cancer screenings – as well as affordable care for basic health issues. Good health goes beyond the physical, and our culturally-sensitive mental health services make a critical difference in thousands of lives every year. In AHS’ Family Literacy Program, adults gain the English-speaking skills needed to land jobs, while at Passages Charter School, elementary grade students acquire the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in high school and beyond. AHS also transforms education into action. Last year, even in trying economic times, AHS found jobs for 525 clients. Community Health programs reach out to thousands of clients providing vital health and wellness education and linking them to needed primary healthcare and support services.

Instead of falling through the cracks, Chicago’s most vulnerable families are given the tools to succeed and a safe space to practice what they’ve learned.
AHS offers comprehensive and integrated services in the following areas:
    Healthcare
    Education
    Employment

  • History:
  • AHS began as a small group in a small office in the Chicago Uptown area over thirty-four years ago. While staying focused on our original mission we have pursued focused growth in addressing the community’s needs through youth and adult efforts and outreach. Our programs breakout into three specific areas: Education, Health, and Workforce. All our efforts seek to address and empower our community members in overcoming the challenges and barriers they face.

Our education program includes a myriad of services including literacy, ESL and GED. Our health services, which started as a small volunteer effort have grown into three clinics and now include mental, dental and primary care. Our workforce efforts, which this funding would support, address the needs of the unemployed or underemployed through various programs.
