General

  • Mission:
  • Bringing wholeness to the islands of the Pacific through health care and health education.

  • Overview:
  • The Wellness Center has been the main source of information, education and training about the prevention of type 2 diabetes in the Marshall Islands since 2006, when we implemented a grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Defense to engage in a medical investigation into lifestyle change to address diabetes. The results of the research showed that about 30% of the people who participated in the “interventions” or workshops (people who were referred by the Ministry of Health with acute type 2 diabetes) maintained the changes needed in diet and exercise to control diabetes; another 30% required ongoing support to maintain the dietary and exercise changes required to maintain normal blood glucose levels. Canvasback made a commitment to continue to partner with the Ministry of Health and expand its efforts to prevent and better manage the impacts of diabetes in the RMI. Through nutritional education, culinary training, exercise classes, and agriculture, the Wellness Center equips people with the resources and tools to make healthy, affordable choices for themselves, their families, and their communities.

We work closely with the Majuro Hospital - providing health education and healthy food for diabetic patients referred by Majuro Hospital, and referring people identified through our community outreach efforts with high blood glucose levels to the hospital for further medical screening and care. The Wellness Center’s demonstration kitchen provides healthy food at low cost (at our cost or below) to community members Monday through Friday, and provides free fitness classes for all ages at the center. Canvasback serves 50-80 healthy meals per day, and conducts interventions for 80 people each year, including long-term follow-up services.

  • History:
  • Canvasback Missions, Inc. is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization founded in 1981 to serve remote Pacific Islands with needed health care and health education.

In the mid 70's, founders Jamie and Jacque Spence gave up professional careers to sail the Pacific, looking for meaning for their lives. Over the course of seven years, they found islands populated with incredible people with unmet medical needs. During their travels, they listened to the stories of the people they met and began to understand their situation. Through their network of medical professionals, they mobilized skilled doctors to provide care that was unavailable in the tiny hospitals of the Pacific.

in 1981, they began construction of the 71-foot, aluminum-hulled catamaran ("Canvasback"), launched on June 16, 1986. The boat was designed to deliver free medical, dental, and eye care to remote islands accessible only by sea. She was staffed by volunteer physicians, dentists and seamen who brought healing and hope to the people of Micronesia.

In 1998, after 14 years of island service, Canvasback's expanding programs had outgrown the catamaran. They sold the boat and used the proceeds to continue building solid programs of services for the FSM and the RMI. These services include providing much-needed health care for the island people, continuing education for island health care workers, and supplies and equipment for island hospitals.

Between 2000 and 2004, Canvasback Missions provided more than $4.1 million worth of services to the Federated States of Micronesia (when calculated at low Medicare rates). Historically, the mission has been able to provide at least $4 worth of service for every $1 in donations received, making the mission an excellent vehicle for multiplying charitable dollars.

After years of service in Micronesia, the President of the Marshall Islands asked Canvasback to develop a diabetes reversal program for the nation. In 2006 opened the Wellness Center, a clinic where we conducted lifestyle interventions for patients with severe diabetes. This new diabetes prevention program consisted of health education, diet change, and exercise. After the grant, Canvasback continued to support the Wellness Center, enlarging the kitchen to include a bakery. We began extensive community outreach, including working with the Ministry of Education to teach the teachers and reach the children in the schools. In 2010, we secured funding from the World Diabetes Foundation (in Denmark) to develop and implement a diabetes prevention curriculum in the public schools. The Wellness Center now has a classroom/dining room, an exercise room, a demonstration kitchen, and demonstration gardens. Its purpose is to provide the tools that empower participants to make the changes that will lead to improved health.
