General

  • Mission:
  • The mission of the American Heart Association is….building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular disease and stroke. That single purpose drives all we do. The need for our work is beyond question.

  • Overview:
  • The American Heart Association works to improve the lives of all Americans in a variety of ways. We’re the nation’s leader in public health education and CPR training. We help people understand the importance of healthy lifestyle choices in an effort to reduce chronic diseases and obesity. We work with diverse populations to help them understand their unique health risks. We are a leader in scientific research and provide science-based treatment guidelines to healthcare professionals to help ensure the best treatment for every patient, every time. We inform policy makers and the public as we advocate for changes to protect and improve the health of our communities.

Why is our work so important? Because heart disease is the Number 1 killer of Americans. Stroke ranks fourth and is a leading cause of severe adult disability. Some form of cardiovascular disease affects more than one in every three adult Americans. Many suffer terribly from disabilities caused by these diseases. Each year, these diseases kill more than 811,000 Americans, which is roughly the same as the entire population of El Paso.

The AHA is a national organization headquartered in Dallas, Texas, with seven regional affiliates. California is an integral part of the Western States Affiliate (WSA) which also includes Alaska, Arizona, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington. Much of our work is carried out at the local level, caring for our families, friends and neighbors. The Orange County Division is one of California’s 18 local divisions.

  • History:
  • Founded in 1924, the American Heart Association (AHA) is a preeminent resource for cardiovascular disease and stroke prevention, treatment, education and research. For over 90 years, the AHA has worked at the local, regional, state and national level to reduce rates of heart-related disability and death for ALL populations. We accomplish this by providing community health outreach programs such as CPR training, establishing standards of care for stroke and cardiac patients in hospitals, offering health equity programs that address the needs of a diverse demographic and supporting innovative cardiovascular science. We are committed to saving lives – one heart at a time.
