General

  • Mission:
  • The mission of Charlotte Family Housing is to empower homeless families to achieve long-term self-sufficiency through shelter, housing, support services and advocacy.

  • Overview:
  • Charlotte Family Housing (CFH) is a shelter-to-housing empowerment program for working, homeless families. We do not do anything for a family that they can do for themselves. It is not only a sympathetic issue to fight homelessness in our community, but it is a smart issue for economic reasons as well. Investing an average of two years of rental subsidies with empowerment-structured support services for a homeless family is what we believe is needed for long-term success. Empowering families with the skills they need to move out of homelessness and eventually out of poverty is not only the best thing for each family, but it is also best for local and national economy so that we do not continue an entitlement mentality and corresponding recidivism for people in poverty.

CFH works through three program areas to help solve family homelessness:

    • Housing Families: We address the immediate need of homelessness by sheltering working, homeless families and help them forge a path back to housing, along with providing short-term rental assistance in apartments all around Charlotte.

    • Building Partnerships: We partner with families in the areas of financial self-reliance, careers, education, support networks, and health and wellness. Volunteers form intentional relationships of encouragement and support with our families.

    • Empowering Change: To empower families to sustain housing, we offer matched savings accounts, microloans for qualified emergencies and below-market rate auto loans. We provide a holiday store where families can purchase new gifts for a portion of the price. This helps to preserve dignity and self-esteem, increase personal accountability, encourage budgeting and decrease dependency.

  • History:
  • Charlotte Family Housing (CFH) is an innovative solution for family homelessness in the greater Charlotte community. On July 1, 2011, three agencies merged to form CFH; Charlotte Emergency Housing (1985), Family Promise of Charlotte (2005), and the Workforce Initiative for Supportive Housing (2007). The result of this merger is that homeless families now have a single point of entry with one agency that will work with them from shelter through housing. Have the same clinical social worker from program entry to exit that will assist with the necessary wrap around support services to allow the families to become self-sufficient and ultimately break the cycle of generational poverty and homelessness.
