General

  • Mission:
  • Algalita Marine Research Foundation was founded in Long Beach, California in 1994 by Captain Charles Moore, and is dedicated to the protection of the marine environment and its watersheds through research, education and restoration. Our primary work is to establish an international data set of the levels of plastic debris pollution found in the Pacific Ocean from the inland watersheds to the coastal zones and into the high seas, and to inform the public about its existence so that solutions can be found to keep the problem from getting worse.

  • History:
  • In 1994, Captain Charles Moore of Long Beach, California brought together a small group of thoughtful, dedicated people who wanted to change the world. Their focus was on the “coastal ocean,” particularly the restoration of the disappearing giant kelp forests and on improving the water quality along the upper and lower California coasts through wetlands preservation and construction of new wetlands if necessary.

Captain Moore, a lifelong sailor, commissioned the building of the sailing Oceanographic Research Vessel Alguita – the “little kelp plant” – to assist with kelp transplanting and water monitoring. The reconstruction of her standing rigging after being dismasted north of American Samoa on her delivery voyage in 1996, required a “shakedown cruise” to test the new rig’s viability. That 1997 voyage resulted in the discovery of the “Eastern Garbage Patch” in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre.

This, together with our subsequent research in the North Pacific Gyre, changed Algalita Marine Research Foundation’s focus from the coastal ocean to how we humans affect the deep sea with plastic trash. It was the beginning of the mission that we formally adopted in 2007: The Algalita Marine Research Foundation is dedicated to the protection of the marine environment and its watersheds through research, education, and restoration. Of course, our trash travels from near shore to pelagic seas and so we continue to work locally and we have not forsaken the giant kelp’s restoration. The interest generated by our work in the remotest part of the ocean has fueled our growth over the last decade. The opportunities for research and educational outreach at Algalita are now limitless, and our Board struggles to direct our limited resources.
