General

  • Mission:
  • Common Ground Relief's mission is "to create resilient Gulf Coast communities that are environmentally sustainable, financially viable and personally cohesive."

  • Overview:
  • Common Ground Relief, a volunteer-based, non-profit organization located in New Orleans' Lower Ninth Ward (L9W), was established in 2005 to provide short-term relief and long-term rebuilding support to the Greater New Orleans communities affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Common Ground Relief's mission is "to create resilient Gulf Coast communities that are environmentally sustainable, financially viable and personally cohesive." To realize its mission, Common Ground Relief helps individuals and communities build the personal and financial assets as well as physical infrastructure that support community transformation and renewal. Common Ground Relief identifies the following issues as those that are vital to creating communities that are environmentally sustainable, financially viable and personally cohesive: (1) residents with marketable job-skills; (2) individuals and families with financial knowledge and asset retention skills; (3) access to affordable legal support; and (4) environments that are ecologically sustainable.

Common Ground Relief engages local, visiting and corporate volunteers in an integrated platform of programs that include coastal wetlands and urban environmental restoration, school-based environmental education, home building, job training and legal support. Since its inception, Common Ground Relief has engaged nearly 50,000 local, regional, corporate and civic volunteers in the implementation of its programs. To learn more about Common Ground Relief’s work and accomplishments, visit its website at www.commongroundrelief.org or https://www.facebook.com/commongroundrelief.

Of the 50,000 total volunteers, over 20,000 have participated in environmental restoration projects in urban communities and on federal, state, city, and private wetland properties including the re-vegetation and maintenance, as well as the building of a public outlook, of the Bayou Bienvenue Wetland Triangle. Over 30% of Common Ground Relief's college sponsored volunteer groups from around the country are repeat volunteers, which demonstrates its ability to effectively engage and motivate the volunteer groups. Highly regarded for its ability to organize engaging and mutually beneficial volunteer experiences, Common Ground Relief has become a model for volunteer engagement and community revitalization.

One of Common Ground Relief’s major achievements is the completion of the one-acre Native Plant Nursery that it owns and operates in the Lower Ninth Ward and on which the staff, volunteers and Youth Green Team members propagate, pot and maintain plant material needed for its programs. Organizations such as the Army Corps of Engineers and Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries are sourcing the wetlands materials from the Native Plant Nursery. Over the past few years, the Coypu Foundation has generously invested in Common Ground Relief’s mission – first in 2012 with a grant to support the building of the Native Plant Nursery and then in 2013 to provide a part-time Native Plant Nursery Manager/Horticulturalist. These two grants have enabled Common Ground Relief to achieve optimum plant production for the coastal wetlands and urban plantings, increase its capacity for creating, planning, implementing and evaluating coastal wetlands and urban environmental projects and, ultimately, have a greater impact on wetlands deterioration and urban hydrology.
