General

  • Mission:
  • Camp Born This Way's mission is to provide a place where transgender and gender creative kids ages five to twelve and their cis gender siblings can be themselves and play without fear. Camp strives to promote self-esteem and self confidence in the children we serve. Camp also provides a place families can find connection, friendship, and support.

  • History:
  • Camp Born This Way was created by the TransParents Project and is the vision of Camp founder and Co-director, Diana Wilson. The TransParents project was founded in October, 2009. Their mission is to create and support a network of families embracing their children’s gender non-conformity in a kind and loving manner. TransParents currently provides a support group for the parents of gender-diverse children from across Southern AZ, offers education to help the broader community better understand the unique experiences of their children and families, and provides opportunities for their children to connect/socialize with one another.

This camp is a dream come true for TransParents families. Camp allows transgender, gender-queer, gender-creative, non-conforming and questioning youth along with their families to experience a weekend free from bullying, harassment and judgment and provide a true camp experince. Additionally, this camp seeks to strengthen the support networks available to these families beyond this one magical weekend.

This year will be the fourth year of camp. Historically, camp has been held at a ranch in southern Arizona. This year camp will be moved to a beautiful location in the Catalina Mountains. Camp has been supported by the Southern Arizona Gender Alliance and the Wingspan LBGT Community Center. Camp has also been generously supported by grant funding from the Alliance Fund of Southern Arizona, the Fund for Civility and . Currently, The Southern Arizona Aids Foundation serves as Camp's fiscal agent.

In 2014, Camp and founder Diana Wilson received awards through the Child and Family Resources, Inc. and The Lets Get Better Together Conference created by the Tucson LBGTQ Behavioral Health Coalition.
