  • Mission:
  • Co-op America's mission is to harness economic power - the strength of consumers, investors, and businesses - to create a socially just and environmentally sustainable society. We work to grow the green economy by helping individuals to be conscious consumers and investors, businesses to go green, and society at large use economic power to end destructive corporate practices and support a marketplace that is socially and environmentally responsible.

  • History:
  • Before there was a language for a responsible, just, and sustainable economy – what we now call the “green economy” – a visionary group of individuals put forth a revolutionary idea to Americans: We can use economic power to push for socially and environmentally responsible businesses, and put our society on a more sustainable path.

Our founders recognized that too often when we spend or invest a dollar it goes to support institutions and corporations that perpetuate injustice, pollute the environment, and destroy communities. They introduced the new idea that social justice and environmental problems were interrelated and inevitable results of our flawed economic system. Then they worked to create a green marketplace where none existed by seeding, supporting, and promoting sustainable practices, policies, and products. They started informing and mobilizing consumers, business leaders, and investors to make every monetary transaction contribute to the common good.

Co-op America was born in 1983, and 25 years later millions of people turn to us as the green economy experts. Today, our staff and programs are changing the way Americans do business in many sectors of our economy. We are advocates for environmental sustainability, fair wages, socially responsible investing, stopping sweatshops and child labor, and investing in clean energy to curb the potentially devastating effects of climate change. Every day we work with a guiding vision of a world where all people have enough, where all communities are healthy and safe, and where the wealth and bounty of the Earth is preserved for all the generations to come.
