  • Mission:
  • Our Mission is to feed the hungry by providing a short term food supply to those in need, and referring them to a source of more permanent support.

  • Overview:
  • We are a medium size, local emergency food bank serving the town of Apache Junction, Arizona, and NW Pinal County including the area known as Gold Canyon, Queen Valley and Queen Creek. We also serve the East Mesa area of Maricopa County. We operate with one full time Operations Manager, two Grocery Store Route Truck Drivers who share part time hours; as well as 75+ volunteers that help us meet our mission of "Working Together to Feed the Hungry." In 2014 we served over 36,000 clients. That number represents an increase of 29.5% from 2013. We see the pattern of needing assistance continuing to grow and guess our numbers will reflect that need in 2015. The largest growth can be attributed to the increase of the "Working Poor," families that must choose between paying bills and putting food on the table. Apache Junction is one of the poorest cities in Arizona. 20% of our population lives at the poverty level and 50% of our population qualifies for some sort of emergency food assistance. Our role is vital to those in need here. The Food Bank has been an advocate for feeding the hungry since 1982. As a volunteer organization, we have depended on the generosity of volunteers who give their time, talents, and resources toward reaching this goal. Our food bank provides a 3 to 5 day emergency food supply, one time per month, for individuals and families in need.

  • History:
  • The Apache Junction Food Bank has been an advocate for feeding the hungry since 1982. As a volunteer organization, we have depended on the generosity of volunteers who give their time, talents, and resources towards reaching this goal.

1982 - D.E.S. recognized the need for a food bank in the area and donated 500 dollars as seed money. For the first year we were supported by churches in our community.

1983 - Apache Junction Reach Out (AKA Apache Junction Food Bank or AJFB) is incorporated in Arizona by-laws and procedures were created.

1984 –AJFB receives their first block grant from C.A.H.R.A., Pinal County's Human Resource Agency. The food bank provided food for over 10,000 people in the last year.

1990 –AJFB purchase a van and volunteers give a minimum of 600 hours a month, 65,000 hours to this point

1991 – AJFB moves from the St. George Community Church location on Ironwood because costs are too high.

1992 – AJFB moves into the building at 575 N. Idaho Rd., Ste 701 Apache Junction 85119 (located on the City of Apache Junction Municipal Campus). This is the bank’s current home paying a very minimal rental fee per year. The city devoted this building to the bank because they believed Apache Junction needed (and still needs) a formal food bank.

Currently the city and Pinal County are updating the building's infrastructure including our Client Services Desk and waiting areas.
