  • Mission:
  • The Citizens Coal Council is a national alliance of social and environmental justice grassroots groups and individuals working to protect communities affected by the mining, processing, and burning of coal through advocating enforcement and strengthening of environmental laws as they relate to coal.

  • History:
  • The Citizens Coal Council (CCC), a 501(c)(3) was formed in 1989 when grassroots groups from Kentucky, Illinois, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, Virginia, the Rocky Mountain Region, and the Navajo Nation recognized the need to work together to build a strong and unified voice from the coalfields. The coalition was designed to galvanize the coalfield justice movement and protect people, land, and water from the harm caused by the whole coal cycle. From mining, processing, and burning of coal to the disposal of power plant waste, each step of the cycle pollutes air, water, and land thereby stripping citizens and communities of their quality of life. CCC is now a national alliance of 24 social and environmental justice grassroots groups and hundreds of individuals working to protect communities affected by mining.
