  • Mission:
  • To serve our communities and abate hunger and food insecurity, as we acquire, store and distribute food and basic essentials. Product is distributed primarily through other non-profit agencies that in turn provide for the needs of the poor and the needy.

  • History:
  • The Bread of the Mighty Food Bank (BMFB) was established in Gainesville, Florida in 1987, and remains the only food bank operation in our five-county service area (Alachua, Dixie, Gilchrist, Lafayette and Levy counties). BMFB is a Partner Distribution Organization within the Feeding America food banking network (the nation’s largest domestic hunger relief charity) and operates within the Central Florida Food Bank of Orlando area. In order to keep pace with increasing food insecurity in north central Florida, BMFB moved from its original facility of 8,500 square feet to a 20,000 square foot warehouse facility in January 2007. This facility now has 2,500 sq. ft. of refrigerator and freezer capacity to accommodate a large selection of donated perishable food. Growth has also included acquisition of refrigerated trucks to ensure safe transport of this food.
As mentioned above, BMFB now has over 150 member agencies who serve on the front-lines of hunger. Since 2005, BMFB has also developed a program of mobile pantry services to reach deeper into un-served and under-served communities throughout north central Florida. In October 2007, BMFB established a Kids Café Program, which provides free nutritional meals and snacks for children. BMFB also administers the USDA (TEFAP) commodities program for our 5-county area.
In each of the last five years, the amount of food distributed each year by BMFB has consistently increased every year. Most recently, during FY 2013-14 (Oct 2013 – Sept 2014), BMFB distributed 6.7 million pounds of food into north central Florida through its network of over 150 member agencies and its mobile pantries.
