  • Mission:
  • Colorado Rocky Mountain School cultivates a learning environment in which students discover their potential to excel as individuals, contribute to their communities, and participate thoughtfully in the world we share. CRMS is an independent high school that combines college preparatory academics, outdoor and work experiences, arts, community service and campus life to develop strong students, who are engaged young adults with a global awareness and a local spirit.

  • History:
  • In 1953, John and Anne Holden, teachers at the Putney School in Vermont, searched the American West for an ideal place to start an independent, coed boarding school "for college-bound boys and girls who are of sound body and mind, and full of a spirit of adventure." They found the Bar Fork Ranch in the picturesque farming and mining town of Carbondale, Colorado, and deemed it an ideal place for the Colorado Rocky Mountain School. CRMS's academics merged the rigor of Eastern prep schools with a philosophy that emphasized students' role as a part of a larger community. The southwest's deserts and mountains composed CRMS's extended campus, with twice-yearly all-school wilderness trips becoming ingrained in the curriculum early on. The Holden's felt that the school itself was responsible for developing well-rounded , aware human beings so CRMS emphasized community service in off-campus projects locally, and also nationally and internationally through Interim and Senior Projects. CRMS's beyond-campus focus has led to a leadership role in the natural environment and sustainability, which includes campus solar energy projects, an organic school garden, and sustainable food and supply purchasing among others. Today, CRMS has 165 students and nhas gone from being a boarding-only school to offering a day student option. Amid change, CRMS hews firmly to the values of the Holdens.
