  • Mission:
  • Children's Community School lays the foundation for the urban student's educational success by offering a robust curriculum and unique experiences, by developing their individual character, and by cultivating strong parent involvement.

  • Overview:
  • The CCS philosophy is one that understands and realistically acknowledges the existing difficulties faced by our students. It does not permit those difficulties to become an excuse for failure or an obstacle to learning however. CCS is committed to assisting our students and their families in dealing effectively with the conflict and challenges in their lives as it impacts the child’s school experience. Our aim is to create a community that fosters a positive learning experience within a supportive environment. The Summer Bridges staff strives to help students develop a sense of belonging, involvement and success, which act as protective factors for children faced with the risks of poverty.

We celebrate creativity and encourage multiple solutions to problems, demonstrating to children that there may be more than one “right” answer and that trial-and-error is a valid approach to solving many problems. Too many times children do not try something because they are afraid of failure; we strive to teach them that it’s most important to keep trying.

  • History:
  • Children's Community School was established in 1969 in the Berkeley Housing Project of Waterbury by a group of concerned parents and educators who wanted to bring high-quality education to underserved children.
Over the years, this fledgling school grew in strength, eventually moving to its current location at 31 Wolcott Street (former site of Sacred Heart High School) and expanding to include grades pre-K through 5.
Today, CCS is the only private, secular nonprofit to provide a complete education to Waterbury’s inner-city children. It serves almost 150 students, ages 3 through 11, from low-income families in Waterbury. Open from 6:30 am to 6:30 pm 12 months of the year, the school provides a safe place for children from challenged environments to grow academically, physically, and emotionally. The goal is to provide these individuals the academic and personal tools necessary for self-determination.
Historically, 92% of CCS graduates go on to complete high school on time. Numerous factors contribute to this outstanding achievement.
    • Academic instruction at CCS is highly individualized. Classes are small (no more than 17 students to a class).
    • More than 10,000 hours of volunteer tutor assistance annually provide supplemental instructional assistance.
    • The CCS Mentoring Program follows each CCS 5th-grade graduate through middle school to provide academic and social support through the inevitable challenges of adolescence.
    • Parents must pay a token (generally $350 annually) tuition and agree, in writing, to supervise their child’s homework and academic progress.
