  • Mission:
  • The Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh Mission is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever.

  • Overview:
  • Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBSPGH) has been serving children through quality mentoring programs for fifty years by implementing prevention programs that produce positive outcomes. BBBSPGH serves youth from single-parent families, custodial caregiver living arrangements, and low-income households. After participating in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program for at least twelve months, 68 percent increased their school attendance, 77 percent of children gained greater feelings of social support, 79 percent improved their academic performance, and 100 percent avoided involvement in the Juvenile Justice system. Additionally, 97 percent of children reported strong satisfaction with the Big Brothers Big Sisters program and their mentors.

In 2015, BBBSPGH served a record 1,400 children across its mentoring programs, including community-based, site-based, and mentor2.0. BBBSPGH was recently presented with the 2014 “Midsize Agency of the Year” and “Board of the Year” awards at the Big Brothers Big Sisters of America National Conference.

The Agency of the Year award is presented to a local agency that best demonstrates excellence in quality mentoring services. Some of the criteria include sustained long-term mentoring relationships and increased revenues that ensure sustainability and growth. This is the second time in three years that BBBSPGH was awarded this honor. The Board of the Year award is presented to local affiliate boards whose leadership results exemplify the highest standard of quality and sustained growth.

  • History:
  • When Kenny Ross was a child in Philadelphia, he had to face a judge after getting caught breaking the law. The judge gave him two options: go to juvenile detention or become a part of Big Brothers Big Sisters and be matched with a mentor. Fortunately, Kenny chose the latter, not realizing the significance of the decision until much later. By 1965, Kenny was a successful business owner in Pittsburgh and decided to start a local Big Brothers Big Sisters because of his positive experience with the program. Between 1996 and 2002, BBBSPGH branched out of Allegheny County to serve additional youth in neighboring Washington and Greene counties.

BBBSPGH knows that children who are nurtured by a community of positive, caring adults can overcome challenging circumstances and reach their fullest potential. These convictions are reflected in the agency’s mission and evidence-based programs.
