  • Mission:
  • Audubon’s mission is to conserve and restore natural ecosystems, focusing on birds, other wildlife, and their habitats for the benefit of humanity and the earth's biological diversity.

  • Overview:
  • Audubon Florida works in a strategic alliance with the National Audubon Society and conducts all of Audubon's Florida programs. Audubon uses science, advocacy, education and on-the-ground conservation to protect birds, other wildlife and their habitat. Audubon Florida's conservation programs, nature centers, chapters and partners have an unparalleled wingspan that reaches thousands of people each year to inform, inspire and unite diverse communities in conservation action.

  • History:
  • On March 2, 1900, the first meeting of the Florida Audubon Society was held in Maitland, Florida. The focus of the organization was to stem the devastating decline of wading birds in Florida who were killed for their feathers that were sold in the lucrative plume trade. The list of early officers included N.Y. Governor and later U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt.

President Roosevelt said the following: "The Audubon Society, which has done far more than any other single agency in creating and fostering an enlightened public sentiment for the preservation of our useful and attractive birds, is [an organization] consisting of men and women who in these matters look further ahead than their fellows, and who have the precious gift of sympathetic imagination, so that they are able to see, and wish to preserve for their children's children, the beauty and wonder of nature."

From this start in the early 1900s, Audubon expanded to create education programs, citizen science programs and wardens were hired to protect bird rookeries. Guy Bradley, a warden in the Everglades was killed in the line of duty in 1905 defending birds from plume hunters.

Building off of this strong legacy, Audubon Florida has expanded its reach throughout the state. Audubon Florida is the only state-wide organization to utilize research sites, engage citizens at nature centers and employ professional policy staff in multiple locations from the Florida Panhandle to the Florida Keys. 44 independent local chapters are also located throughout Florida and make Audubon's reach even broader.
