General

  • Mission:
  • Bayaud Enterprises creates hope, opportunity and choice, with work as the means through which people with disabilities and other barriers to employment can more fully participate in the mainstream of life. Through programs, services and advocacy that advance this mission, Bayaud Enterprises helps low-income, disadvantaged and homeless individuals and families with disabilities access and acquire basic human needs, and become economically self-sufficient through employment.

  • Overview:
  • Bayaud serves people with extraordinary barriers to economic self-sufficiency, independence and employment including individuals with physical, mental, social and economic disabilities. Many are homeless or near-homeless; most have incomes below poverty, and all are unemployed or underemployed. The need of individuals to attain self sufficiency is further hampered by job growth in generally low-paying sectors. Moreover, 18.9% of Denver residents have incomes below poverty (roughly $22,000 annually for a family of four) and the percentage of children living in poverty has grown to 28.4%. For women with dependent children, poverty stands at 49.6% (American Community Survey, 2013).

The issue of homelessness remains a significant problem in Denver. Overall, 53.1% of Denver’s homeless are individuals with children and almost 50% have a documented disability. Also, 14.3% of homeless individuals were reported as ‘unaccompanied youth’. (Point-in-Time Survey, Metro Denver Homeless Initiative, January 27, 2014). The most commonly reported reasons for homelessness in Denver are loss of a job, housing costs and the breakup of a family (Denver’s Road Home, 2015). In 2014, over 50% of Bayaud participants reported that they were currently homeless or had been previously homeless. While Denver is home to many nonprofit agencies that serve those in need, no single agency can solve the various and complex problems of homelessness.

Bayaud believes that by creating jobs for people with disabilities, we effectively change lives and move individuals towards economic self sufficiency. Bayaud ensures that our work addresses unmet community needs and does not duplicate existing services through the organization’s active participation in numerous community collaborations serving individuals and families that are disadvantaged, disabled, homeless, unemployed and living in poverty.

The goals of all Bayaud Enterprises programs and services are: to enhance economic self-sufficiency resulting from job training and placement; to stabilize individual/family circumstances attributed to job training, support services and job placement; and to enhance self-sufficiency resulting from access to and acquisition of community resources.

  • History:
  • Bayaud Enterprises (“Bayaud”) was established in 1969 in Denver, Colorado. Bayaud’s mission is to create hope, opportunity and choice, with work as the means through which people with disabilities and other barriers to employment can more fully participate in the mainstream of life. Our constituents are disadvantaged, low-income, homeless, and ethnically diverse and have one or more significant disabilities that adversely limit economic opportunities and access to basic human services. Our constituents are as diverse as the programs and services responding to their needs. Bayaud’s philosophy embraces the belief that nothing is more fundamental to economic self-sufficiency than having a job.

Bayaud is unique in that the organization is a social enterprise, and has launched several businesses over the years which provide two critical things: earned income to help provide operating funds to the organization, and, actual employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities. Bayaud offers the following programs and services: Work Adjustment Training and Job Training; Vocational Evaluation/Assessment; General Office and Computer Skills Training; Life Skills Classes; Job Seeking Skills Classes; Job Placement Services; Job Coaching Services; Certified Toastmasters Group; Community Site Job Placement Collaborative; 9NEWS Broadcast Recording; Community Resource Navigation and Benefits Acquisition Assistance;; AmeriCorps/IRS Tax Assistance for Low-Income Individuals and Families; Cavity Free at Three Dental Kit Assembly; Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF); Denver’s Road Home and Ten-Year Plan to End Homelessness; Denver’s Road to Work; Document Management: Document Destruction, Shredding and Recycling; Housing & Work Connection Collaborative with Del Norte Neighborhood Development Corporation; Financial Literacy Program; IT Helpdesk and Career Based Training.
