  • Mission:
  • In response to the Gospel, Colorado Springs Ecumenical Social Ministries (ESM) promotes self-sufficiency and restores dignity by providing food, medicine, housing, job placement, educational programs and spiritual encouragement.

ESM provides a collaborative response to the low-income, the working poor and the homeless in Colorado Springs by meeting basic human needs through direct financial assistance, educational opportunities and spiritual encouragement. While ESM is faith-based organization, neither staff nor volunteers proselytize nor is a statement of faith required to receive services.

  • Overview:
  • The goal is to provide emergency services to individuals and families primarily in central Colorado Springs through direct financial assistance, educational opportunities and spiritual encouragement thereby working to bring them towards self-sustainability. This is accomplished with emergency food assistance, clothing, partial rental assistance to prevent eviction and partial utility assistance to keep the lights on. ESM’s takes a holistic approach in meeting the financial emergencies that clients face thereby increasing their odds of becoming self-sustaining. For example, if an individual is seeking rental assistance (the emergency) and it is determined they are also seeking better or additional employment, a referral to the Jobs Department is made. In the Jobs Department they receive guidance on résumé writing, job search advice or other employment-related assistance. Other services within ESM may also be provided such as emergency food, prescription assistance or clothing.

  • History:
  • ESM was established in 1982 by eight downtown churches as a faith-based, social outreach ministry to the low-income and the homeless in Colorado Springs to address the needs of food and housing. Initial programs offered included rental assistance to prevent eviction and an emergency food pantry. Additional services were added such as prescription assistance, local transportation vouchers, clothing, showers and hygiene items. A Jobs Department was added to help remove the barriers to employment through jobs counseling and educational opportunities.
