  • Mission:
  • The mission of CVEP is to promote a diversified, year-round economy by facilitating programs that stimulate job creation in key industries through business attraction, retention and expansion, and unite business and education leaders to create well-trained and educated future workforce.

  • Overview:
  • Founded in 1994, the Coachella Valley Economic Partnership (CVEP) is a 501c3 regional economic development organization that provides an array of business development and workforce development programs/services. It is devoted to attracting, retaining and expanding business while improving the quality of the workforce -- in order to raise the overall economy and quality of life for the region. Through our team of investors, community leaders, consultants and staff, CVEP markets, facilitates and provides economic opportunities for residents and businesses in the Coachella Valley.

CVEP is led by a 50-plus member Board of Directors comprised of successful, high-profile business leaders from a cross-section of regional industries, civic leaders of eight cities in the Coachella Valley and Riverside County, educators, and representatives from the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, who have become a major economic force. This dynamic organization explores regional issues and strategies related to the area's economy, workforce training needs, and the relationship between business and education in the Coachella Valley.

  • History:
  • Previous activities successfully implemented and managed by CVEP include higher education scholarships funded by the College Access Foundation and local public/private matching partners, which has resulted in the award of more than $6 Million in scholarships to more than 1,700 low-income Coachella Valley students over the past four years. In 2005, with funding from the James Irvine Foundation and Riverside County Economic Development Agency/Workforce Investment Board (WIB), CVEP launched the Career Pathways Initiative as a strategy to raise the intellectual capital and workforce capacity of the region by aligning the community’s education, workforce and economic development efforts. Over the first seven years, more than 400 program partners and major foundation partners came together to support development of a system of career pathways programs to feed a pipeline of engaged students who emerge well-prepared for success in both college and career. Pipeline programs are currently focused in three target clusters: Advanced Technology (Energy/Clean Tech/STEM), Healthcare & Life Sciences, and Creative Arts & Design Industries.

CVEP’s service area includes the Greater Palm Springs area, which has nearly 80,000 full-time and seasonal residents, as well as 1.6 Million tourists each year. CVEP’s extended service area also benefits more than 500,000 residents within nine (9) cities in the Coachella Valley region of eastern Riverside County, California.

Special efforts launched by CVEP within the past 24 months include the launch of its Coachella Valley iHub program, which serves as incubator program for innovative start-up sustainable technology companies. Additionally, CVEP launched its Small Business Development Center program in early 2012 through a grant from the Small Business Administration. Recently, CVEP was one of 26 recipients nationally of the Investing in Manufacturing Communities Partnership Initiative, Phase I, to develop an implementation-ready strategy that will attract advanced manufacturing to the region.

CVEP’s iHub program was launched in 2011 with a mission to “[a]ttract, inspire, and assist renewable energy and enabling tech businesses for the Coachella Valley.” Of the 13 businesses currently in the iHub program, three were chosen to present at the 2012 World’s Best Tech Conference in San Diego. In less than two years, 23 jobs have been created through the program and more than $225,000 has been generated in client revenue.

In order to address the growth and demand of the iHub program, CVEP has collaborated with the City of Palm Springs to secure facilities space for a proposed iHub Accelerator Park Project, which will create 40,000 square feet of retail space for iHub businesses that are ready to graduate to manufacturing and research. The City of Palm Springs has agreed to a long-term lease of property adjacent to the Palm Springs Airport, which was formerly used by the Palm Springs Unified School District –but has been vacant for several years.
