  • To conserve and restore natural ecosystems, focusing on birds, other wildlife, and their habitats, for the benefit of humanity and the earth's biological diversity.

  • Overview:
  • Audubon of Martin County, Inc., is a countywide environmental and conservation group that owns environmentally sensitive lands and provides environmental education and conservation programs for the public and its members. Its headquarters is located on a 4.7-acre urban nature preserve in downtown Stuart. Through the years, it also has owned or managed other environmentally sensitive lands while their long-term protection was being arranged.

Audubon of Martin County is best known for its public environmental education programs, which will be discussed more fully in this application.

  • History:
  • The Martin County Audubon Society chapter was founded in January of 1955 with 160 members.

In March of 1964 the Reed family of Jupiter Island conveyed 4,290 linear feet of Jupiter Island oceanfront, 123 acres known as the Reed Wilderness Seashore, to the Florida Audubon Society, which turned over the management responsibilities to Martin County Audubon.

Audubon of Martin County incorporated in 1965.

In 1967, the Wilderness Seashore was granted National Natural Landmark status by the U.S. Department of the Interior, the first site in Florida to receive the designation. On March 28, 1970, the land was turned over to the Federal Government and has since become known as the Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge.

From 1973, through 1983, the Chapter purchased 4.7 acres in Stuart off Palm Beach Road for a nature preserve named after one of the former owners, Clifton “Possum” Long. Long was a well-known and loved agriculture teacher at Martin County High School.

Through the years, Audubon of Martin County has conducted a variety of environmental education programs and advocacy campaigns to engage students and the general public to learn more about local birds and their habitats, and to care for local environmental lands needing protection.

Long Nature Preserve in one of Stuart’s oldest neighborhoods. The wetland was a joint storm water retrofit project of Audubon, the City of Stuart, and the South Florida Water Management District, which granted Audubon of Martin County, Inc., $125,000.
