  • Mission:
  • The mission of the American Southwestern Railway Association (DBA the Travel Town Museum Foundation) is to educate the public about railroad history as it pertains to the development of the Southwest Region of the United States, particularly the Los Angeles area. We fulfill this mission by supporting the restoration, operation, and interpretation of the historic railroad equipment at the City-operated Travel Town Museum in Griffith Park.

The Foundation supports Travel Town by helping the Department of Recreation & Parks to fund and administer the Museum's volunteer programs, restoration projects and educational outreach efforts. Many of the Museum's programs and activities are funded through grants and donations along with proceeds from our Museum Gift Shop.

  • Overview:
  • The Travel Town Museum Foundation supports the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks at the Travel Town Museum by running the Volunteer Program and by managing educational outreach efforts at the Museum. We mentor high school youth in our docent training and restoration projects. We facilitate special-needs groups and use their abilities to help with light maintenance and gardening. We currently manage 10 restoration projects on historic equipment. We work with the Verdugo Hills Council of the Boy Scouts of America and sponsor/host Eagle Scout Community Projects, host a Railroading Merit Badge Campout, and a Webelos Overnight Campout annually. We operate the gift shop, selling educational and railroad-related merchandise, with proceeds going to help support our educational outreach and restoration programs. We partner with other volunteer organizations like GenerationON and the Points of Light Foundation to host community volunteer days. We recruit, schedule and oversee over 35+ adult and 40+ youth volunteers annually who perform the restoration, operation and interpretation programs.
    • Over the past 5 years, we have given guided tours through our historic passenger cars to over 28,000 individuals.
    • Community volunteers have donated over 6,000 hours to projects at the Museum in 2014 alone.
    • The Foundation has grown from a volunteer crew of 6 in 1988 to over 30 regularly working adult volunteers, a staff of 10 part-time employees and over 40 volunteer students annually.
    • 400+ students have gone through our volunteer programs since it was first implemented in 2008.
    • Operation of the Travel Town Gift Shop began in 2000 and funds most of our programs.

  • History:
  • The American Southwestern Railway Association, Incorporated (ASRA) is a non-profit educational organization with tax-exempt status under IRS section 501(c)(3); its foundation status is non-private. The Association was formed in 1982 for the purpose of preserving the history of American railroading and to help make that history available to the public. We joined in partnership with City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks at their Travel Town Museum in 1987. Beginning in 2000, ASRA adopted the dba of the Travel Town Museum Foundation (TTMF) with the start-up of our operation of the Museum’s Gift Shop. Please see the summary below for more information on our work at the Museum.
Our Mission is to preserve and interpret the history of American Railroading and it's social, economic and demographic impact on our Nation, particularly the Southwest. We do this by restoring, operating and interpreting the railroad equipment at the Travel Town Museum in Los Angeles' Griffith Park.
