  • Mission:
  • The mission of Catholic Charities of Northeast is to provide unconditional love and necessary help to people of all faiths by stabilizing and strengthening individuals and families in need across northeast Kansas. Our vision is to help our neighbors who are challenged by poverty of mind, body, and spirit find the open doors of Catholic Charities in their communities are are met with help, hospitality, and hope.

  • Overview:
  • For sixty years, Catholic Charities has been working to eradicate poverty and lift individuals up to their full potential of self-sufficiency across the agency's 21-counties of northeast Kansas. With each individual that approaches the agency’s doors, the goal is to help them move themselves from situations of poverty to ones of self-sufficiency and hope. To fulfill this vision, the agency implements programming that stabilizes and strengthens families and provides aging and end-of-life care. Across a 21-county service area, nine centers and two mobile Resource Buses stabilize and strengthen families of all faiths. Agency services and current activities include:
    Family Stabilization
    - Refugee and Immigrant Services—including New Roots for Refugees
    - Emergency Assistance and Supportive Housing
    - Shalom House Shelter
    - In-Home Support for the Elderly
    - Hospice
    Family Strengthening
    - Foster Grandparents
    - Friendly Visitors
    - Relationship Enrichment
    - Pregnancy Counseling and Adoption

One of the agency's bedrock programs is Refugee and Immigrant Services, enacted since 1975. In the past year, the agency provided services to close to 500 refugees from Burma, Burundi, Somalia, Bhutan, Iraq and Sudan with services including housing, education, English language development, as well as social and emotional support, and employment—largely in meatpacking, warehouses or the service industry. One of only two agencies in the Metropolitan Kansas City area that resettle refugees, Catholic Charities' major achievements in this program stem from the duration and depth of services provided to refugees resettled, offering services up to five years and distinguishing itself in advanced job placement programming, with 231 refugees being placed in jobs in the previous year, bolstered by a network of 20 partner employers. Given the language and other barriers faced by this population, this is an exceptional track record of employment and helping refugees secure a path to self-sufficiency.

The New Roots for Refugees program is a subset of Refugee and Immigrant Services. The primary accomplishments of the New Roots for Refugees program is its continual renewal and expansion to more deeply engage refugee farmers and diversify product. In order to have a presence at more markets and increase profitability of participants, staff members are working with farmers to increase diversification by offering new products, including mushrooms, honey, and strawberries to meet consumer demand. The program is working to scale up by increasing sales outlets (increasing the number of available shares in the Community Supported Agriculture, dropping off Community Supported Agriculture products to participants, selling wholesale to restaurants). It is for this program that Catholic Charities is requesting support.
