  • Mission:
  • Biodiversity Project works to further public awareness and understanding on select environmental issues and motivate select audiences to take action to protect and conserve natural resources through individual action and advocacy.

  • History:
  • The Biodiversity Project was founded in 1995 by a concerned and forward-thinking group of grantmakers, scientists, and advocates helped to launch the Biodiversity Project as an initiative of the Consultative Group on Biological Diversity (CGBD). The Biodiversity Project worked with leading players in the policy, advocacy, education, scientific, communications, ethical, religious, and grantmaking fields throughout the U.S. and Canada. We grew into a bi-national resource for biodiversity communications tools and strategies and a catalyst for innovative and collaborative efforts to inform the public about biodiversity. At the end of 1999 we completed our transition into an independent nonprofit organization.

In 2003 Biodiversity Project began expanding its communications work to include other environmental issues and resources. Since 2004 we have worked on multiple Great Lakes projects including our Great Lakes Forever campaign, which focuses on building a Great Lakes constituency, our Great Lakes Town Hall, which is an online forum for Great Lakes citizens, as well as other collaborative efforts.

In 2006 we began collaborative work along the Mississippi River and in the Driftless Area of Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, and Wisconsin.
In addition to our resource specific work, Biodiversity Project has developed numerous communications tools and materials and provides capacity building trainings and services for environmental and conservation organizations.
