General

  • Mission:
  • The mission of Bread for the City is to provide vulnerable residents of Washington, DC with comprehensive services, including food, clothing, medical care, and legal and social services, in an atmosphere of dignity and respect.

We recognize that all people share a common humanity, and that all are responsible to themselves and to society as a whole. Therefore, we promote the mutual collaboration of clients, volunteers, donors, staff, and other community partners to alleviate the suffering caused by poverty and to rectify the conditions that perpetuate it.

  • Overview:
  • Since our inception in 1974, Bread for the City has tirelessly worked to improve the standard of living for tens of thousands of low-income District residents. We provide food to those who are hungry, clothing to those who need warmth, medical care to those who are sick, legal advice and representation to those who have nowhere else to turn, and case management to those who just need someone to talk to about their problems. We have a vision of Washington, DC as a nurturing community where all residents have access to the basic material resources they need for survival and growth, and the prosperity of their social, emotional, and spiritual lives.

Adult women (61%), minorities (89% Black/African American; 5% Latino), the elderly (22%), and families with children (65%) all represent significant portions of our clientele. Last year, Bread for the City’s 103 dedicated staff members and 300 regular volunteers worked collaboratively to serve 32,882 low-income DC residents through the following core services:
    - Food: 16,000+ unique individuals, representing over 25,000 family members, will receive a three-day supply of nutritious groceries.
    - Clothing: Thousands of articles of clothing will be distributed, free of charge, to 5,000 people in need.
    - Social Services: Case managers will complete 23,000+ social service visits for clients who want to address complex problems and identify long-term solutions.
    - Medical Clinic: BFC’s four core providers will complete primary medical care visits for 3,000+ unique patients. Our dentist will provide dental care to 750+ patients in need of oral care.
    - Legal Clinic: Attorneys and legal support staff will provide advice and representation to 5,200+ clients. In addition, our fourteen full-time staff attorneys will open ~700 cases for full representation.

  • History:
  • Started in 1974, Bread for the City is a front line agency serving Washington’s poor. The agency began as two organizations; Zacchaeus Free Clinic began in 1974 as a volunteer-run free medical clinic, and Bread for the City was created in 1976 by a coalition of downtown churches to feed and clothe the poor. The two entities merged in 1995. Today, we operate two Centers in the District of Columbia and provide direct services to low-income residents of Washington, DC. All of our services are free. Our mission is to provide comprehensive services, including food, clothing, medical care, legal and social services to low-income Washington, DC residents in an atmosphere of dignity and respect.
