  • Mission:
  • AVDA is a non-profit organization that has served the Houston community for over 30 years, with the mission “to end family violence by advocating for the safety and self-determination of victims, promoting accountability for abusers and fostering a community response to abuse.

  • Overview:
  • AVDA's Legal Advocacy Program helps to break the ties that bind survivors to their abusers, while its nationally acclaimed Battering Intervention and Prevention Program (BIPP) works to rehabilitate batterers and to hold them accountable. AVDA's Youth and Counseling programs help to break the cycle of abuse for the next generation. A leader in legal advocacy, intervention and prevention, AVDA builds on community support and collaboration to end family violence.

  • History:
  • Prior to 1980 in Houston, battered women had little access to information on legal rights, or to the services of an attorney. In response, the National Council of Jewish Women Greater Houston Section founded Aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse (AVDA) to serve as an adjunct to local women’s centers and as a resource for the thousands of battered women that shelters could not serve. AVDA has served nearly 100,000 victims of abuse since its inception. Recognizing that batterers also must receive rehabilitative services to end their abuse, AVDA added the Battering Intervention and Prevention Program (BIPP) in 1984, which is the first program of its kind to be accredited in Texas.
