General

  • Mission:
  • To promote reading and writing to non-literate and semi-literate adults, including non-English speaking adults. The council has trained volunteer tutors and offers our services at no charge to the student. The volunteers are trained in the Laubach Method which is easily adaptable to non-English speaking. Currently, we have 10 trained tutors and a variety of students; Caucasian, African-American, and Latino of various ages ranging from 31-62. Our students come to us with many different goals, with the most popular being employment opportunities, next most popular reason is being able to help their children with their homework.

  • Overview:
  • ACALC receives no government funds; only funds from private donations and private grants.

  • History:
  • The ACALC was started in 1984 when a group of concerned citizens of our community came together to begin the process of board development, bylaws, articles of incorporation, application for the 501(c)(3), and fund raising, it was necessary to purchase training materials to prepare the volunteer tutors and, their future students. After several years passed, and workload became too itime-consuming and involved, it was also necessary to hire a coordinator, to work a few hours a week. The coordinator provides public relations through presentations to churches and civic organizations. Also, the coordinator carefully matches student-to-tutor. This includes coordinating their schedules and a mutual location where a private session may be conducted, such as churches, library, and YMCA. The coordinator tests the student to evaluate their individual starting point in the educational process. Our training materials, including workbooks, are available in 4 levels.
