General

  • Mission:
  • The mission of the Children’s Grief Center of New Mexico (CGC) is to provide a safe and supportive environment where children, teens, and their families can share experiences and feelings while grieving a death.

  • Overview:
  • The Grief Center has been providing bereavement support for young people and their caregivers since 2001. In 2001, we served 38 people in peer support groups, and in FY 2014-215, that number reach to 582 children and families -- 129% of our 450 person goal! Over the years, in response to community need, we’ve added a satellite location in Rio Rancho, additional support groups and program staff in an ongoing effort to eliminate a waitlist for services. We are the only agency focused on supporting grieving youth in central New Mexico. In 2010, we offered “Good Grief Day Camp”, and in 2013, we began “Camp Corazon” – an overnight camp for grieving children from all over New Mexico. We receive referrals from school counselors, medical and mental health professionals, funeral homes, hospices, and faith communities. We are the experts in providing effective support for bereaved children and continue to do so in an efficient manner with the help of more than 100 volunteers who serve in many capacities, from family greeters and serving meals to group bereavement facilitators and camp counselors.

Children ages 5 and up, teens, young adults ages 18-25, and adult caregivers attend the Grief Center. Support groups are always provided at no charge to families for as long as they need to attend. By offering young people in our communities practical, effective support as they navigate their grief journey, the Grief Center mitigates the chances that painful circumstances will result in life-long suffering and adversity.

  • History:
  • CGC was founded in 2001 by a small group of community members who had experienced untimely deaths in their families. When these families sought grief support services for their surviving children, they realized there was no organization specializing in helping bereaved youth; thus, the Children's Grief Center of New Mexico began. Based on the model of the Dougy Center in Portland, Oregon, (founded in 1982), The Children's Grief Center of New Mexico began providing free support groups for grieving children and their families.

Originally, CGC was entirely volunteer-led until receiving a grant from Frost Foundation (Santa Fe, New Mexico) to hire its first staff person in 2005. Since that time, the Grief Center has grown exponentially: serving hundreds of grieving families annually, with a small staff, and a corps of over 100 volunteers. In 2011, the Grief Center co-located with All Faiths, another Albuquerque nonprofit organization, and moved to a 3.5 acre facility. This new, larger home allowed the Grief Center to increase the frequency of peer bereavement support groups to serve more children and families, and provide specific, theme-focused family workshops including Back to School Boot Camp and Grief in the Holidays.

In 2007, CGC began providing support groups in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. In 2008, we began Spanish language groups. In 2010, we began "Good Grief Day Camp", and in 2013, we transitioned our day camp to our overnight weekend camp -- Camp Corazon. In 2014, our Executive Director co-authored "Parenting Through Grief: The Attunetion Approach" with Dr. Craig Pierce, founder of Southwest Family Guidance Center and Institute, to provide guidance to parents and grieving children.

Over the past 14 years, CGC has grown to be Central New Mexico's foremost expert on providing effective support to mitigate family grief.
