General

  • Mission:
  • The Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation transforms the lives of young people through sailing. Everything that we do is driven by our belief that all young people have the ability to excel – through sailing we provide opportunities to grow, achieve and inspire excellence. Inspired by Olympic Gold and Silver medallist Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson MBE, the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation was set up in 2013 by Sir Ben Ainslie CBE, Iain Percy OBE and Andrew’s wife Leah, to help young people through sailing to develop their personal skills that will improve their ability to succeed in life and to improve access to jobs and careers in the maritime sector.

  • Overview:
  • The Foundation uses the Andrew Simpson Sailing Centre (ASSC) facilities to support its charitable aims and operations. The Centre is one of the Foundation’s key projects; trading at the Centre is delivered through the Foundation’s two wholly owned subsidiaries Andrew Simpson Sailing Centre Ltd and Andrew Simpson Trading Ltd on the Foundation’s behalf. It provides sailing opportunities for the local community, and principally focuses on young people between the age of 5 and 24. We aim to combine invaluable time spent on the water alongside providing life changing inspiration and encouragement.
The centre works in partnership with local education providers and charity's to offer young people the chance to experience sailing, an activity that many of them will not have had the opportunity to try before. Over the coming two years the centre is working with Winchester University on a degree level research project into the effect that sailing has on the health and wellbeing of those taking part in sailing.
The centre aims to develop partnerships in the local area to develop its offering to local people. These include Chesil sailabiltiy who provide sailing for those with disabilities and Adventure Under Sail who runs the tall ship Pelican and offers life changing advertures for young people. It is this organisation we are looking to work with.

  • History:
  • After the tragic death of Olympic Gold Medalist Andrew 'Bart' Simpson whilst out training for the 34th Americas Cup in May, the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation officially launched yesterday.

Supporting the next generation was something Simpson was extremely passionate about. Founded by Sir Ben Ainslie, Iain Percy OBE and Andrew’s wife Leah, the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation will work to honour Andrew’s life and legacy by encouraging youngsters into sailing and to enjoy the water as much as he did. At grassroots level it will encourage children to visit their local sailing clubs and ‘give it a try’ by providing equipment and coaching, with support from Olympic medallist regional mentors.

The Foundation will support deserving children from their first experiences on the water. Through a mentoring programme with some of the world’s best sailors, the children will eventually be competing at major international events as members of the 'Bart' squad. Through their sailing experiences the charity will help to develop their life skills, but importantly it will also assist the children into employment in the sailing community through apprenticeships with partners including sail makers, boat builders and other marine companies. Starting with a test close to Andrew’s home town in Dorset, the programme will grow to other areas of the UK and worldwide.
