General

  • Mission:
  • The mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ventura County is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported 1:1 mentoring relationships that change their lives for the better, forever.
Our program model, ranked #1 nationally for effectiveness with "at-risk" youth, leads to positive and measurable outcomes for children, including improved academic success, reduced truancy and drop-out rates, avoidance of negative behaviors, and an increased ability to become a productive adult member of our communities.
We are the ONLY mentoring program in Ventura County that works with foster youth, children with incarcerated parents, or those living in single parent homes who are in need of a mentor to support them on a 1:1 basis.

  • Overview:
  • For more than 111 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters has operated under the belief that inherent in every child is the ability to succeed and thrive in life. Most children served by Big Brothers Big Sisters are in single-parent and low-income families or households where a parent is incarcerated. As the nation’s largest donor and volunteer supported mentoring network, Big Brothers Big Sisters makes meaningful, monitored matches between adult volunteers (“Bigs”) and children (“Littles”).
Big Brothers Big Sisters provides a system of ongoing evaluation and support which is proven by independent studies to help families by improving the odds that “Littles” will perform better in school and avoid violence and illegal activities, and have stronger relationships with their parents and others. In Ventura County, Big Brothers Big Sisters serves nearly 1,500 children annually.

  • History:
  • Since becoming a fully affiliated agency of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America in 1970 Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ventura County has served over 10,000 children. The agency is seen as the premier mentoring organization in the county and is a fiscally sound agency without audit exception. The agency has a variety of programs including: Foster Youth Mentoring Program; Mentoring Children of Prisoners; School and Community Violence Prevention Programs; Community Based Programs for children from single parent homes; and School and Site based programs at 17 sites throughout the county.
The Agency has been recognized twice for excellence by the Annie E Casey Foundation and as a Gold Standard Agency by the National organization.
