  • Mission:
  • CAPTAIN Youth and Family Services supports and empowers young people, adults and families in their journey to personal growth and self-sufficiency.

  • Overview:
  • CAPTAIN Youth and Family Services is a non-profit, grassroots, community action agency that serves as an advocate for the unmet needs of disadvantaged children and families in Saratoga County, New York. For 38 years, CAPTAIN has provided programs that address the core issues facing our society including homelessness, poverty, youth violence, underage drinking, drug use, academic failure and family dysfunction.

CAPTAIN has approached these issues with such well known programs and services as: Elementary and Adolescent Help-Lines (Teen Talk and Phone Friend); a Youth Drop-In Center (Cheryl's Lodge in Halfmoon Heights Mobile Home Community); Street Outreach Program; Runaway and Homeless Emergency Youth Shelter; Youth Leadership Programs (CAPteens); Community Outreach; Family Assistance; Information and Referrals; Emergency Rent and Utility Assistance; Emergency Food Pantry and Community Education services.

Our mission is to provide services necessary to address youth and families in need through social, educational and prevention programs, which encourage personal and social development. CAPTAIN strives to build resilient, emotionally healthy and self-sufficient families.

  • History:
  • CAPTAIN Youth and Families Services started in 1977 as a small, grass-roots, coalition of concerned and interested individuals and groups who were concerned about issues surrounding the southern Saratoga County community, particularly the Shenendehowa School District.

CAPTAIN stands for Community Action for Parents Teens and Interested Neighbors.

The coalition saw a growing number of issues surrounding drug and alcohol use, teen pregnancy, and a rash of suicides help solidify the community and the coalition to action. CAPTAIN was formed and began immediately to tackle these difficult issues with programs, services, public education forums, and many other activities.

Over the years, CAPTAIN grew to a larger and larger coalition/organization and in 1981 formed its own 501c3 and became a recognized charitable organization. This allowed for greater fund raising efforts and the ability to pursue grant funding from federal, state, county, local, and private resources. CAPTAIN went on to tackle larger social issues facing low-income, disenfranchised, and disadvantaged children, individuals, and families throughout all of Saratoga County.

We became widely known as the resource and advocate for those facing serious crisis and issues, where no one else could help and attacked the issue of teen homelessness for Saratoga County and the Capital Region.

CAPTAIN has stayed true to its beginnings and origin by remaining closely tied to the community, grass-roots, and volunteer driven. We pride ourselves on being nimble and responsive to the changing needs of low-income and disadvantaged children, individuals, and families, and continue to create, sustain, and coordinate coalitions of like-minded organizations, public entities, and concerned individuals within the community for impactful and life-changing intervention programs and services.

CAPTAIN will continue to be at the forefront of efforts and initiatives that affect disadvantaged and needy children, individuals, and families in Saratoga County.
