General

  • Mission:
  • 1 Million Women's mission is to empower millions individuals and households across the globe to transition to a net zero carbon output lifestyle through the way we live and our daily choices. We cannot rely on governments and corporates alone to fix this critical global issue we must all do our bit.
Women have enormous power to change the world and we are inspiring them to do so.

  • Overview:
  • Since its inception, 1 Million Women has grown into the largest women’s movement in Australia of over 300,000 women and girls fighting climate change by reducing their own and their household’s carbon output through joining our carbon challenge and through participating in our energy efficiency and carbon cutting campaigns.

We are now a leading women’s charity that embodies both climate practical action and gender equality as its core principles and the only organization of its kind.

Please take a look at us …
    www.1millionwomen.com.au

In 2013 1 Million Women was chosen by the United Nations UNFCCC’s Momentum for Change: Women for Results initiative as one of 6 Women led global initiatives to be highlighted at COP 19 in Warsaw. Christiana Figueres the head of the UNFCCC said when she presented us with our award that “how we all live is crucial in the fight against climate change and 1 Million Women is an active and powerful solution”.

Since then we have had a number of requests to spread globally but we felt we had more to learn locally and decided to gather a substantial number in Australia before we expanded.

    SUSTAINABLE FUNDING MODEL
Our model has always been that it is free for women and girls to join 1 Million Women. We never wanted there to be a financial obstacle to joining our voice and accessing our practical information regarding low carbon living.

1 Million Women has historically been funded by a mix of government and philanthropic grants and corporate sponsorship. We have now expanded the funding sources to include peer-to-peer fundraising through our established membership and a regular giving program.

However in order to achieve our goal of having millions of women (and so, households) around the globe reducing their carbon output and heading towards a net zero goal, 1 Million Women is implementing a long term sustainable funding strategy and we have been developing two key revenue streams.

    a. Later this year we will launch our ‘1 Million Women Marketplace’ , a platform where organisations, businesses, services and individuals that provide low carbon alternatives to daily life can advertise within our website.

    b. Our Women Power App. Where we are developing an App (to be purchased) which will provide users with a full suite of discounts and tools to help with energy efficiency.

    THE GRANT

We are seeking a major grant of $500,000 per year for 3 years. This will allow us the time to expand our sustainable funding model and keep growing our membership of women and girls living a low
carbon life. It will give us time to roll our model out to countries who want to empower their own women and girls to do the same.

We feel it will take us the next 3 years (until 2018) to transition to an organization that is fully self-funded.

    OUR IMPACT TO DATE

Although we are a small team, we have achieved an enormous amount to date (see our stats below). We are ambitious and ready to grow. We have a simple model to roll out internationally (which we are doing with the wonderful pro-bono help of DLA Piper INT).

Members can do an audit of their lifestyles, chose daily activities for cutting carbon and calculate their carbon savings through our Carbon Challenge.

And they learn what a low carbon life looks like through our beautiful blog and social media content.

We calculate and measure the collective impact of these carbon savings and use these stats to inspire more behavior change results from our members and broader audience.

Collectively we’ve saved thousands of tonnes of food waste through our food waste programs and events.

We’ve made a commitment that 20% of our members will be girls under 20 yrs of age. It is an essential part of what we do and very
dear to our hearts and We’ve made a commitment that 20% of our members will be girls under 20 yrs of age.

1 Million Women educates women to fight climate change by understanding and utilising their own economic power - divesting their superannuation, banking and investments away from fossil fuel investment.

We have over 100 Ambassadors, young, old and in between, who are passionate role models for 1 Million Women.
We have a strong and engaged Advisory Board and a powerful and growing governance board.

    CONCLUSION
We know that climate change is an enormous threat to the livability and viability of life on our planet.

Our aim is in the next three years and beyond that our millions of members alongside our governments and corporate sector are all transforming to a clean carbon free economy that will give the planet and humanity good prospects of avoiding 2 degrees warming.
This major funding grant will allow us to get on with the work of growing our movement internationally and implement our sustainable funding model.
Please consider partnering with us. Its simple, the bigger we are the more carbon we save.

  • History:
  • 1 Million Women is a new kind of movement. We are women who are acting in our own lives to protect our planet and climate for future generations.
    Founded in 2009 by mother
of four Natalie Isaacs, then a cosmetics manufacturer, Natalie realised that individual action is key to solving the climate crisis. Deciding to leave behind the over-packaged world of skin and beauty care, she set out
to create an organisation that inspires and empowers women to act. Natalie is a pioneer in
the gender and climate change arena in Australia.
    Her own climate journey
    from apathy to real action
cuts through complexity and delivers a simple message that resonates with women and girls of all ages.
"Women are powerful. We make up to 85% of decisions that make up the household's carbon footprint. We have enormous influence as consumers." Natalie says.
"My vision is to inspire climate action through women's empowerment. How we live is a key solution to the climate crisis."

I (Tara Hunt, Co-CEO) came on board in February 2013. My twin girls and I had volunteered with Natalie and 1 Million Women at various events. We had a small family foundation giving to critical Indigenous and Environmental projects within Australia and as a family, we decided to start financially supporting 1 Million Women (as well as volunteering). As a grant maker, I wanted to make more major grants to have potentially a greater impact by helping to build capacity for one or two organisations rather than my previous ‘spread across many’ approach.

I chose to follow my passion. I believe that climate change is the biggest issue of our time. I also believe it is imperative that countries and corporates drastically reduce their carbon footprint and I am passionate to empower individuals do the same.

I decided to help Natalie achieve her vision and not only financially contributed but also came on as Co-CEO.

I absolutely believe that 1 Million Women is a game changer and eminently scalable.

I am now on the other side of the fence writing to you as a grant seeker looking for funding and partnership with us to grow.

I believe in the power of what we are doing, creating a mass movement of women and girls globally who are fighting climate change through their everyday actions and decisions and we need 3 years’ core funding to really fly.

We have spent much of the last 2 years growing our movement nationally and our social media communications especially our blog.
We rolled out our first campaign to help save the Great Barrier Reef where we sent 60,000 names to a petition to The World Heritage Committee asking it to be listed as 'In Danger'
We are now ready to roll out internationally and just need the resources to fly.
