General

  • Mission:
  • Our mission is “to provide opportunities for persons who are blind or visually impaired in need of training, employment and services. We believe that all persons who are blind or visually impaired have the right to succeed in every area of life.”

  • Overview:
  • A Brighter Path Foundation (ABPF, EIN: 26-3376328) is the supporting fundraising arm of Winston-Salem Industries for the Blind (WSIFB, EIN: 566001467), and both are non-profit 501(c)3 organizations.
ABPF funds unique opportunities such as the Community Low Vision Center (CLVC), A Brighter Path (ABP) programs and the Student Enrichment Experience (SEE) operating out of Tracy’s Little Red Schoolhouse (TLRSH). These innovative programs and services reach people who are blind or visually impaired of all ages. From young children to senior citizens, the people supported by these life-enhancing initiatives have access to activities, adaptive vision products, specialized training, and support.

Through our CLVCs in Winston-Salem, Asheville, and Chapel Hill, NC, we have been able to reach thousands of individuals with low vision or blindness of all ages and change their lives by providing them with assistive technologies necessary to maximize their remaining vision and by providing training. As of today, we have touched and served individuals from 87 counties of North Carolina. With a recent addition of the state-of-the-art Mobile Vision Center, we have substantially increased our outreach and will continue offering our assistance throughout NC. The Focus on Literacy program provides low vision adaptive exams and technologies for school-age children for in-home use, so that they maximize the remaining vision and are able to study independently.

All ABP offerings focus on developing independence in children or adults. We have been providing those who are blind with computer and internet literacy training (on site and remotely), recreational clubs and gatherings, arts and crafts classes, independent living skills training, orientation and mobility instruction, music programs, and sports clubs. Our SEE program is now a year-round after school program and the SEE summer learning camp continues the educational component teaching students independence children and teens who are blind or visually impaired. Our Tracy’s Little Red Schoolhouse is a one-stop location for all individuals who are blind or visually impaired to receive independent living skills, learn arts and crafts, and take part in educational, social, and recreational opportunities.

  • History:
  • Winston-Salem Industries for the Blind (WSIFB) was created in 1936 to provide employment for those who are blind. ABPF was created in 2008 to support WSIFB’s fundraising efforts and communities programs for the blind.
Our Tracy’s Little Red Schoolhouse in Winston-Salem opened its doors to the community in May 2012. The center is a one-stop location for all individuals who are blind or visually impaired to receive independent living skills, learn arts and crafts and take part in educational, social, and recreational opportunities. The Schoolhouse is also home for all SEE activities.
