General

  • Mission:
  • The vision of The Cohoes Connect Center for Youth is to be a "Destination Center" for local youth, children and families. Our mission is broad-based, intended to address the various needs of our target groups, with a focus on education, community enrichment & cultural empowerment. Our purpose is to be a community resource that helps. The Cohoes Connect Center for Youth is an urban youth center that is destined to become not only community resource center, but a safe and secure destination for the youth, children and families of the City of Cohoes and surrounding areas. As a destination Center, The Cohoes Connect Center for Youth will provide: mentoring & counseling; performing arts activities; classroom and computer lab space; tutoring; flexible activity space; as well as gym and recreation programs. We will offer supervised recreational time and after school activities for youth in grades 6 to 12.

  • Overview:
  • Our focus at The Cohoes Connect Center for Youth is helping young people develop a foundation which will empower them to develop the skills needed to succeed. We will offer a supportive, caring and fun environment while also providing structure, discipline and mentoring to the young people in the community. The Cohoes Connect Center for Youth is a 501(c) 3 tax-exempt organization. We are proud to say that 100% of donations and grants will go directly to benefiting the youth of our local area and surrounding communities. The Cohoes Connect Center for Youth will change young people‚Äôs lives. Some of the major problems the youth of Cohoes face are social and economic.
*52% of children from Cohoes-area families are eligible for free school lunch and breakfast programs compared to 43% statewide. This is 120% higher than the state average
*One in four Teens (24%) is reported as having misused or abused drugs at least once. That is a 33% increase in the last five years.
Close to 25% of students who attend Cohoes High School drop out of school. In addition the Cohoes Middle school rating is 54% compared to the average state, county and city schools ratings. 12% of Cohoes High School students were suspended for unexcused absences, fighting, and/or use of alcohol or drugs, compared to state average of 6.2%. That is 194% more than the state average.
*The teen pregnancy rate for the city is 48.25% compared to 26.5% statewide per 1,000. That is 177% more than the state average.
The Cohoes Connect Center for Youth will support youth success in academics, and avoiding drugs, alcohol, and contacts with law enforcement. Mentors and program participants will provide homework help, career guidance and support. We believe that with the assistance of caring people to provide mentoring and counseling we can help supplement the education needs, which could potentially increase the school rating. We believe that having a safe, secure destination for the youth, along with the counseling and mentoring provided at the Connect Center would be a great tool in combating the drug and teen pregnancy problems facing Cohoes. As well as helping the youth of Cohoes succeeds in life.

  • History:
  • The concept for the Cohoes Connect Center for Youth was birthed in the fall of 2009 by a group of concerned citizens and neighbors who saw the need for our Urban Youth to have a safe destination to come, outside of school hours and activities. Cohoes Connect Center for Youth has been a not for profit, 501-C3 organization since 2012. The location (49 Johnston Ave) was chosen because of the proximity to the Middle and High Schools respectively. Currently, the building is a 125 year old Catholic Church housed by a local, active nondenominational congregation. Good Ground Family Church has graciously agreed to rent the new 6,000 sq. ft. of renovated space to the Cohoes Connect Center for Youth upon the completion of the renovation. The walls are framed, the pluming is plumed, and the electrical is complete. We are one inspection away from a Certificate of Occupancy. As a debt free organization in these challenging days, we can only complete our project through grants like yours and the generosity of many donors and volunteers.
