  • Mission:
  • The Community Care Clinic of Dare provides basic healthcare, medication assistance, and wellness education for financially challenged, uninsured persons living or working in Dare County (N.C.).

  • Overview:
  • The Community Care Clinic of Dare has a little over 400 active adult patents. Two-thirds of our patients have a chronic illness: Hypertension,Diabetes, COPD, or a thyroid condition, all requiring on-going management. Without the Clinic many of these cases would have gone undiagnosed until a critical condition existed. These patients would have been dependent on Emergency Room care when at a crisis level. With proper management, education and self-accountability, our patients are able to maintain a normal lifestyle. Many of our patients are employed and the efforts of the Clinic help keep a health and viable work force.
Working within its limited resources, Community Care Clinic strives to be a good community member. It collaborates with the local hospital, local health department and other local and state relief agencies.
NC MedAssist, a non-profit from Charlotte, NC and the Clinic recently partnered to host s Free Over-The Counter Giveaway. The over-the-counter medications were supplied by Med Assist. Over 200 local people benefited from the event. A smaller version was more recently held on Hatteras Island. Future events are being planned and will continue to be held as long as we are supplied with the medicines.
The Outer Banks Hospital has recently purchased a fully equipped wellness bus that it takes out on location to do various screenings. Our staff nurse works part-time with the hospital as member of the bus team. Her presence greatly assists us in the distribution of our information to local uninsured population. It also enhances the Clinic/Hospital relationship.
The Clinic has an active partnership with Albemarle Project Access, a non-profit that facilitates Specialty Care for the uninsured. The Dare County representative operates within the Clinic's facility at no cost. Through the partnership, a free dental initiative for the uninsured has just begun. All dental patients will be seen first by Clinic providers and remain as patients of the Clinic for their primary care needs. This the importance of combined primary and dental care is being addressed.
Two orthopedic surgeons volunteer within the Clinic to see uninsured patients with orthopedic or diabetes related foot problems. A certified Homeopathic
The Clinic also offers it facility to the local dementia care agency, Gentle Expert Memory care (GEM) for free quarterly memory screenings. The Clinic has a partnership with a local certified homeopathic counselor that any patient seeking homeopathic care will be seen at no cost.

  • History:
  • The Community Care Clinic of Dare was founded in 2005 based on the results of a 2002 County Health Assessment. It was found at that time that 24% of the population had no health insurance coverage. A local local collaborative partnership, Healthy Carolinians of the Outer Banks began efforts to establish a free medical clinic. The partnership's efforts resulted in a new partnership of The Outer Banks Hospital, Dare County Department of Public Health and the Albemarle Hospital Foundation, which founded Community Care Clinic of Dare. Community Care Clinic of Dare is its own 501c3 non profit organization. The three founding partners have no fiduciary relationship with the Clinic but the Clinic's By-Laws require a representative of each entity to hold a seat on its Board of Directors. Originally, the Clinic was open one night a week in Kitty Hawk (N.C.) with one volunteer medical provider. The Clinic now resides in Nags Head, NC. and is open for patients Monday-Thursday, plus one additional evening clinic/month in Nags Head and a once-a-week evening clinic on Hatteras Island. The Clinic has seen over 3,000 patients since inception
