General

  • Mission:
  • In our quest to provide displaced Veterans and their families the opportunity of home ownership we are building affordable, sustainable, relocatable homes out of shipping containers.

  • Overview:
  • We are creating homes for homeless Veterans utilizing shipping containers. They are being obtained from port area container "graveyards" thereby reducing landfill, albeit, one container at a time. We are using recyclables and environmentally friendly options such as wool insulation in as much of the construction and finishing touches as possible. These containers will be sustainable, relocatable, and most importantly affordable for our Veterans. They will live in their home in a designated area while they become reintegrated to the community and continue to receive services from the local Veteran's Medical Center. Each new homeowner will be required to assist in the completion of the next home being constructed. We will assist with finding a permanent location for the Veteran to move his home, as well as provide transportation if needed to this home site.

  • History:
  • Founders Jim Welch and Laurie Bjorklund were looking for a way to "make a difference" in the lives of others. With Jim's electrical background and handyman skills, combined with Laurie's work with budgeting and finance, as well as overall comprehension and understanding of non profits the past decade, they believed something really great could be developed. Veterans were the first thought that came to mind. After researching statistics on veteran homelessness, it became apparent this was a greatly needed program. We discovered that Montana leads the nation in unsheltered homeless veterans at 63%, a statistic that no Montanan can be proud of. Even more appalling is that these numbers were compiled in January, when a large number of our homeless veterans have actually traveled south. This leads us to believe the percentage is actually much higher based on a July assessment.
