General

  • Mission:
  • The mission of the Boys & Girls Club of Rutland County is to promote the social, educational, health, leadership and character development of boys and girls during critical periods of their growth -- To inspire and enable all young people between the ages of 6 and 18 years old, especially those most in need, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens.

  • Overview:
  • The Boys & Girls Club has grown in the 16 years it has been in existence. We have grown from a staff of 1 to a staff of 15. In addition to our home base at 71 Merchants Row, we’ve opened 2 new units in the last 6 years. One, in Brandon, VT and one at Hickory Street, which is located in Rutland City’s Public Housing. We serve 350 kids through our three sites, with over 90% of our members on Rutland’s free and reduced lunch program. All three units offer a comprehensive curriculum based on the Boys & Girls Club’s five core areas: The Arts, Education & Career Development, Character & Leadership Development, Health & Life Skills, Sports, and Fitness & Recreation.

We have a very qualified youth development staff involved with the delivery of numerous programs to empower youth. Our staff has years of experience working with children from disadvantaged backgrounds and sensitive to the needs of the at-risk population we serve. We have extensive involvement with providing recreation and sporting activities for children and youth through our annual summer camps and school year programming. We also have a club cook on staff that has many years working with youth in the kitchen, providing guidance on proper and healthy skills and techniques to cooking for themselves and their families. We also address Rutland's recent struggle with the heroin epidemic by offering a comprehensive preventative program addressing the risks associated with drugs, tobacco, and alcohol. In addition, we also offer a Healthy Relationships program which is offered to emphasize the importance of healthy relationships and provides accurate and up to date information about STI and HIV/AIDS, and contraception use.
