General

  • Mission:
  • Our Mission: Advancing smart investment in urban and community trees, parks, and green spaces through outreach and education, community-based activities, and collaborative action. Our Vision: Thriving and prosperous California communities transformed by healthy trees and green spaces.

  • Overview:
  • The primary purpose of our program is to improve and enrich the urban forests in disadvantaged communities (DACs) across California by planting an abundance of site specific and drought tolerant/shade trees of various species, all while developing a network of communities that have a desire to address climate change and improve air quality utilizing urban forestry in California. This project aims to educate these communities on the importance of reducing greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) as well as how an improved management of a city's urban forest can help reduce these emissions. Through this determined planting initiatives, we will unite regional community-based organizations to support and further influence other nearby communities. By simply planting trees, we will reduce GHG emissions and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) through providing shade to buildings and homes for the next 40 years, and will filter air, and limit storm water runoff.

Through the endeavor of planting trees, we will utilize this platform to provide education into managing an urban forest and tree inventory while presenting the community with direct evidence on the importance of green infrastructure. A byproduct of this project will also be to create and advertise jobs for those who reside in these DACs.

We have a goal to work with a minimum of eight cities – those we are negotiating agreements with currently are Anaheim, Baldwin Park, Bellflower, Chula Vista, Ontario, West Sacramento, Whittier and Temecula, with likely more to join. The residents, businesses and decision makers in these communities will receive exposure to information regarding the benefits and services trees deliver to communities along with those actual benefits over time, and have the opportunity to participate in creating the change. And the biggest impact on communities will be the new planted and established 1,350 trees which over a 40 year period will provide the following benefits: 8,015 metric tons of greenhouse gases sequestered or avoided, $161,490 in stormwater retention value, $977,820 in reduced electricity costs, $2,396,476 in improved air quality, and $13,150,544 in increased property values. There may be associated increase in property taxes to city coffers and predicted revenue increases for business districts with healthy tree canopies, and a more involved resident base with a better understanding of the life-saving value of trees in communities.

Working with the Lawrence Foundation will strengthen our staff capacity to build this program.

  • History:
  • We were founded in 1968 as the first urban forest council in the nation. We are professionals associated with municipalities and public works, urban planning and design, arboriculture and the nursery industry, and community-based organizations. We support seven Regional Councils across California that act as the backbone of our organizations. As a coalition, we are dedicated to the expansion and perpetuation of sustainable urban and community forests to enhance the quality of life for all Californians. We coordinate educational workshops, host an annual conference, and manage the Invest From the Ground Up Campaign's regional tree planting projects and statewide and community-based educational programs.
