General

  • Mission:
  • The mission of the Challenger Learning Center of Northwest Indiana is to create an exciting learning environment that promotes the continued exploration of the Earth and space sciences through innovative programs that challenge how teachers educate, students learn and businesses operate. Our organization will continue to foster in the community a long-term interest in science, technology, engineering and math.

  • History:
  • The Challenger Learning Center of Northwest Indiana is a space science education center located on the campus of Purdue University Calumet in Hammond, Indiana. It is licensed by Challenger Center for Space Science Education headquartered in metropolitan Washington, DC. The Challenger Learning Centers were conceptualized days after the Challenger accident in 1986. The crew's families wanted to create a living memorial to honor their loved ones by continuing the Challenger crew's educational mission. There are currently 52 learning centers internationally that benefit thousands of students and teachers every year.

Since its inception in February 1999, the Challenger Learning Center of Northwest Indiana has been able to provide an unequaled educational hands-on experience for nearly 150,000 children in Northwest Indiana and Northeast Illinois. Over 2,200 teachers have been trained with innovative methods for teaching math, science, and life skills.

The programs offered at the Challenger Learning Center of Northwest Indiana are Sky Voyages (planetarium programming) for 2nd - 4th graders, simulated missions for 5th - 8th grades, and e-Missions (distance learning) for 3rd - 10th graders. Each of these programs has a teacher professional development component. Our center also offers corporate missions, summer camps, science center activity labs, Girl Scout programming, preschool programs, birthday parties and public tours.
