General

  • Mission:
  • The mission of the Community Campership Council is to fund nature based camp experiences that enrich the lives of culturally and economically diverse San Diego youth.

  • Overview:
  • The Goal of our Kids to Camp Program is to make available a joyful learning experience in a natural setting for deserving children from diverse backgrounds; to expand their understanding of nature, of themselves and others, of the environment and the importance of conservation; to foster wonder, give hope and build confidence.

Our primary objective continues to be providing age appropriate experiences during the summer that enhance youth development. Day camps provide an introduction to nature and working together as a team. Resident programs foster more self- sufficiency and independence for children who need time to make a growth transition into their teens or need to get away from negative peer pressure.

Our Young Leader's Initiative focuses on leadership development and skill building. The leadership and people skills learned serve campers well in any career they choose and smooths the transition to high school or college. Funding is also provided for San Diego County Office of Education's 6th Grade Camp which runs during the school year and is actually an extension of the science and social science curriculum.

  • History:
  • The Community Campership Council was founded with a grant in 1966 to fund camp experiences for children from low income families in San Diego County. The intent of the grant was to expand the diversity in San Diego camps and to give deserving children an equal opportunity to participate outdoors in an organized camp program at least one week a year. At the end of the grant period, the local United Way provided leadership and fundraising management until 1975 when the Community Campership Council became its own 501(c)3 tax exempt organization.

Since we do not own our own camp, the CCC relies upon collaborations with not for profit agencies who run area camps to provide the camp experience. On average, we work with more than 23 resident and day camps each year which meet or exceed the rigorous accreditation standards of the American Camp Association. Camperships are also provided to students who participate in the San Diego County Office of Education 6th Grade Camp. Since our inception, we have helped 72,388 deserving area youth go to camp.
