  • Mission:
  • CHUMS aims to create a positive impact on children and young people's long term mental health and emotional wellbeing; developing resilience and giving them hope for the future.

CHUMS offers bereavement support to children, young people and their families following the traumatic death of someone close. This has recently been extended to non-bereavement trauma referrals.

CHUMS is passionate about making a difference to the lives of vulnerable children and delivers accredited training programmes to volunteers, teachers, social workers and other professionals who support bereaved or otherwise traumatised children.

  • Overview:
  • The charity "Friends of CHUMS" and the Social Enterprise "CHUMS CIC" are two separate organisations. The CIC provides the contracted services across the Bereavement Service and the Emotional Wellbeing Service, while the charity "Friends of CHUMS" provides all additional support so that each child is properly catered for and long term and lasting improvement is achieved.
One example of this is where we launched a Trauma Service in 2010 for children who are bereaved in particularly traumatic circumstances. Children who are bereaved by suicide or murder cannot begin to cope after just a few sessions of support.

  • History:
  • "Friends of CHUMS" now supports/funds 6 different services that receive no contractual funding:
    - Bereavement Trauma Service ) = Truama Service
    - Non-bereavement Trauma Service )
    - Recreational Therapeutic Service
    - Emergency Suicide Response Service
    - Neonatal Bereavement Service
    - Disability Friendship Scheme

On top of this we provide group workshops to add to what has been learnt under the Bereavement and Emotional Wellbeing contracts to ensure that children and young people have the tools to cope on a long term basis. This has proved to be particularly helpful for anxiety and self-esteem as well as for our ADHD groups.
