  • Mission:
  • Action Through Advocacy (ATA) provides services and support to foster and adoptive families of Deschutes , Jefferson and Crook Counties. Our purpose is to improve the retention and success of foster homes, inform and strengthen the families who adopt foster children and, through these efforts, improve the outcomes for abused and traumatized children.

  • Overview:
  • All of our services are designed to ensure the best possible outcomes for abused and traumatized children. Our services include in-home help, relief care (childcare), tutoring, new foster home set up (we provide beds, car seats and other necessities), new foster placement assistance (clothing, shoes, coats, diapers, etc. We also engage in several seasonal activities such as providing school supplies, Christmas gifts, coats and snow boots.

ATA is an official Grace Action Team partner of the Oregon Department of Human Services Child Welfare Division. We also partner with CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) the Oregon Foster Parent Association and other like-minded organizations in our area.

We are currently a volunteer run organization with no paid employees. We provide clothing, beds and other necessary tangible items to between 20-25 foster families each month. We are currently tutoring 4 children and have graduated 2 other children from tutoring. Most children needing our tutoring services are school age children who come into care without knowing how to read or write due to neglect. At a minimum, these children are two to three years behind in school. We provide in-home help to three families at this time.

We are able to provide these services through tireless fundraising and donations from our good hearted community.

As requests for our services increase monthly, we are finding it difficult to maintain through our fundraising efforts and are in need of grant assistance.

Below, I answer the "staff" question with the number of volunteers in our organization.

  • History:
  • ATA has been in existence for the past three years. It was founded by me, Heidi Myers. I am a foster and adoptive mom myself. I was unable to have children. My husband and I decided to adopt through the Oregon foster care system. We had no idea that it would change our lives forever. Nor did we understand the depth of pain or trauma a child from foster care could experience. Parenting a foster child is unique in many ways. You must learn incredible patience and learn how to not to react to behaviors but to respond to the pain and fear below the surface. Many people choose to return children after adoption or stop fostering because the task of raising a traumatized child is more than they can handle. This leaves the child feeling unlovable and unwanted. It is for this reason that I decided to dedicate my life to the rehabilitation of foster children and to support and strengthen those who choose to raise them.

During the first three years, the Oregon Foster Parent Association was our fiscal sponsor, which allowed us to fundraise. We were awarded our own 501c3 status just this year. We are honored to partner with such reputable entities as the Oregon Foster Parent Association and DHS Child Welfare. We have come very far and are so excited about where we are headed!
