    Component # 1 – Dance Curriculum
All-Abilities Dance classes are taught by professional dancers using the Zina Bethune methodology, which ensures professional dance instruction and choreography, developed precisely for individuals with all types of special needs. Classes meet weekly, with one to two hour lesson plans and choreography developed by the instructors. Based on the level of the students, multiple forms of dance, such as ballet, jazz, modern, swing, tap and hip-hop are included in the curriculum. Dance history education is also incorporated in the course. Through dance and participation in the arts, we encourage each student to engage in creative self-expression, to extend their movement skills, and to grow physically, emotionally, and cognitively. The instructor is trained to remove the participant’s preconceived limits and help them realize their full abilities.
    Component # 2 – Dramatic Arts Workshop
Participants in this workshop complete a 20-hour workshop in dramatic arts conducted by a professional actor. Content includes acting techniques such as vocal projection, speech clarity, expressiveness, memorization and scene study. In addition to physical, emotional, and cognitive growth, dramatic arts training builds confidence, composure, and improved communication skills. Tips for effectively using these skills for employment are included in the workshop material. The instructor is trained to remove the participant’s preconceived limits and help them realize their full abilities.

    Component # 3 – Career Development Workshop
This workshop is presented in five, one-hour sessions with instructors using a team-teaching approach. It covers access and use of services offered by the State Employment Development Department, Work Source California, and the cities of Los Angeles, Pasadena, and others. With material focused on transferable skills and entertainment industry employment, this program is most beneficial as a continuation of the dramatic arts workshop. Participants will be provided with professional headshots, necessary to compete in the entertainment industry and for social media sites.

  • History:
  • History Bethune Theatredanse, a 501 c (3) corporation, began in 1980. Founded by Prima Ballerina and actress Zina Bethune, Bethune Theatredanse has reached out and into diverse Southern California communities to pioneer a multimedia, multidimensional form of theater. In 1982, Ms Bethune began an initial class of 30 special needs children and youth in the formal study in dance and movement under the title “Dance Outreach”. Because of the continued success of the programs, in 2005, Infinite Dreams was selected by the Los Angeles County Arts Commission and Los Angeles Unified School District to be on its on-line Arts Resource Director serving arts educators. Zina Bethune, tragically passed away in 2012.
Established in 1982 with a single class of 30 students and organized by Founder Zina Bethune, Bethune Theatredanse was the first professional dance company in America to create a participatory arts learning and performance program in dance for special needs children, youth, and young adults. For over 30 years, we have been providing dance education free-of-charge to all participants. All-Abilities Dance is conducted at multiple public schools and community centers across Southern California. Over 7500 differently-abled participants and their able bodied peers-together-have received Certificates of Completion confirming a successful year of study.

According to the 2010 US Census, 49.7 million Americans have a disability – nearly 1 in 5 or 20% of US residents. In Los Angeles County, nearly 5% are children under 16 years old. The need for our programs is real. In California, The Department of Developmental Services (DDS), administers the Lanterman Developmental Disabilities Services Act and the Early Intervention Services Act. These laws ensure the delivery of apropriate services to infants and toddlers at risk of having developmental disabilities and their families.

Today, the All-Abilities Dance Program serves over 1,000 special needs children, youth, and young adults at 7 school and community sites in Southern California. Our goal is to increase the program sites by 50%. We have proudly graduated over 6,500 students from the program. As recipients of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) arts-learning program, All-Abilities Dance and Zina Bethune have been recognized many times.
