  • Mission:
  • It is the mission of the Community Health Centers of Burlington to provide quality, confidential, affordable health care and human services to all people regardless of ability to pay or life circumstance. Services are designed for those who face barriers to care such as lack of insurance, inability to speak English or homelessness, and are offered in an environment that conveys respect, offers support, and encourages people to be actively involved in their own health care.

  • Overview:
  • The Community Health Centers of Burlington’s (CHCB) mission is to provide access to comprehensive health services for all community residents. As the sole Federally Qualified Health Center and safety net health and human service provider to Vermont’s most populated urban center, we are responsible for nearly 25% of Vermont’s total population. We provide a full range of primary and preventive health care, dental care, OB and prenatal care, as well as psychiatry and substance abuse counseling. Our host of special programs to ensure access to care for Vermonters include two no-cost medical centers in downtown Burlington for homeless men, women, children and teens; financial assistance through our Sliding-Fee Scale; a School-Based Dental Center for low-income/uninsured children; interpreter assistance for our refugee and immigrant patients; insurance screening and application assistance; and connection to low-cost prescription medication programs for income-eligible patients

  • History:
  • The Community Health Centers of Burlington (CHCB) began over 40 years ago as a tiny free clinic serving the residents of the poorest area in Vermont’s only urban area. Over the years, as a traditional urban Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), CHCB’s main location at the northern end of our medically-underserved area flourished. We grew by meeting the significant need of our immediate neighborhood; grappling with intergenerational poverty, an influx of refugees from all over the world, and one of the state’s largest homeless populations. With community capital campaign investments and grant support, our patient numbers and reputation grew. By 2009, CHCB had left behind any vestige of that tiny clinic, serving a small surrounding neighborhood, and had broken down the old boundaries. Our reach radiated across the entire county and into adjoining counties. Recognizing our potential, CHCB was given the first Affordable Care Act Facility Improvement Program expansion grant in Vermont, and nearly doubled the size of our main facility to meet the demand for our care. Since the expansion, our patients have demonstrated their support with their feet; we now have over 18,000 Vermonters walking into one of our sites for care every year.
