General

  • Mission:
  • Assistance League of Palm Springs Desert Area is a nonprofit service organization of volunteers committed to identifying and serving needs of the community through philanthropic programs developed and administered by its members.

  • Overview:
  • Today, the chapter addresses the emotional and physical needs of children and adults of all ages regardless of race or creed by providing needed services in the Coachella Valley.
In 1991, we began providing new school clothing to low income, at-risk elementary school students through the Operation School Bell program. Today we provide school clothing to students in all three school districts in the Coachella Valley. We also provide hygiene kits to elementary school students who attend Growth and Developments classes.
In 1997, we began providing tutoring ad educational tools for children through our Read and Write program, later renamed Read and Discover. We now provide student opportunities for cultural, musical and historical experiences and continue to bring educational tools such as books, computers and software to the classroom.
In 2010, we added a program called Community Outreach to serve one-time unexpected, unmet needs in the community.
In 2012, our chapter joined chapters across the nation for the annual Assistance League "Make a Difference Day" Book drive.
In 2012, we also added the We Care: Focus on Military Families program to provide services to military families at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twenty-nine Palms.
In 2014, we designed the Frank Moss Scholarship for the Arts program to help talented students excel in the arts. Funds for private lessons, musical instruments, art supplies, and tuition for summer camp are awarded to students attending public schools in the Coachella Valley.
Throughout the years, Senior Services has continued to provide companionship and entertainment in the Coachella Valley.

  • History:
  • National Assistance League was organized in 1035 to promote the growth of effective volunteerism through leadership and education. Assistance League was the first nonprofit, nonpolitical, nonsectarian organization founded in the West to recognize the potential of volunteers in helping those less fortunate to a better, more meaningful life.
In May 1973, Palm Springs resident Muriel Methney learned about Assistance League and organized 15 members in the desert to form a guild know as Assistance Guild of Palm Springs Desert Area. This guild concentrated it efforts on working with patients in desert convalescent homes, calling its program "Senior Services". After three years the guild was eligible to receive its charter as the 58th chapter of Assistance League on April 29,1976 and its name became Assistance League of Palm Springs Desert Area.
