  • Mission:

  • Founded in 1984, Camp Sunshine provides retreats combining respite, recreation and support, while enabling hope and promoting joy, for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families through the various stages of a child’s illness.

Camp Sunshine is the only program in the nation offered year-round with the distinction of having been designed to serve the entire family in a retreat model. The program is free of charge to families and includes on-site medical and psychosocial support. Bereavement sessions are also offered for families who have experienced the death of a child from a supported illness.

  • Overview:
  • Our American Camp Association Accredited and award winning Family Sponsorship Program brings families of children battling life-threatening illnesses together in a supportive and healing environment, where families can re-group and re-energize. At Camp Sunshine, every member of the family is given attention, not just the sick child. It’s also a place where families who feel isolated in their battles can meet other families who can identify with each other’s illness related emotional, physical and financial issues. Life-threatening illnesses can wreak havoc on the family unit, and can result in serious long-term damage to the family and each family member. By bringing families together and connecting them with others like them, Camp Sunshine provides the support that these families desperately yearn for and need.

Recreation is a critical component to the Camp Sunshine experience. A host of recreational activities allow children to relax and enjoy the simple pleasures of childhood, while parents find quiet moments to walk by the lake and reaffirm their support for one another. In addition, games and events are designed to foster family involvement, encouraging families to laugh and play as a unit. Our safe, idyllic lakeside setting provides just the right environment in which families are able to reflect, reenergize and restore hope.

Ill children come to Camp Sunshine to just have fun as ordinary children do everyday. Most families with an ill child have not participated in much-needed playtime since diagnosis. Here, sick kids get a break from being sick kids - to chat, to laugh, simple pleasures that many have not been able to experience in months or even years. Likewise is the case for all family members.
But, while this recreational component is important, the program would only be half as effective were it not for Camp Sunshine’s psychosocial program, one of Camp Sunshine’s greatest strengths. These sessions may be the first opportunity the family members, including the children, have had to share their fears and frustrations with others who can genuinely identify with the same experiences. Workshops provide a forum where family members can learn from each other how to manage the needs of their children in the midst of the child’s illness; and, should the child fail treatment, during the end stages of life.

These parent support groups are unique, in that they are filled with the energy of many people, much more so than home-based programs can be. Each session typically allows for a broad range of responses, thus allowing almost everyone to find someone with whom he or she can identify. By the end of the week at Camp Sunshine, mothers and fathers will tell you that they have talked more intimately with other parents than they have at any other time in their lives. Families who attend the sessions reiterate that the experience in the group workshop with other families enhances their own abilities to cope.

More than just a camp, Camp Sunshine is a critical fueling station for families to help them along their journeys.

  • History:
  • Camp Sunshine was established in 1984 by Anna Gould and Larry Gould, owners of the Point Sebago Resort in Casco, Maine. From 1984 to 2000, they donated their facilities and hosted camp sessions for thousands of children and their families in need. The program was so highly regarded and received, that it soon became apparent that Camp Sunshine had to expand. In 2001, Camp Sunshine opened its doors to its own permanent year-round facility.

That year, the program was immediately expanded to eight sessions, double the number offered in previous years at its former home at the Point Sebago Resort. In the years that followed, the program continued to expand, to the point where Camp Sunshine is now offering as many as 27 sessions annually, during all seasons.
