  • Mission:
  • Since its founding in 1976, American Hiking Society has been the only national voice for hikers - dedicated to promoting and protecting America’s hiking trails, their surrounding natural areas and the hiking experience. AHS represents millions of hikers committed to beautiful places to hike and who believe that the preservation of hiking trails and their environments is important and a worthwhile legacy to leave future generations.

  • History:
  • Our Accomplishments
For more than 30 years, American Hiking Society has been at the forefront of hiking and conservation issues, achieving many successes, notably:
    In the 1970s and 1980s
    • Influenced the passage of amendments to the National Trails System Act to designate several new national scenic trails and encourage volunteers and trail clubs to build and maintain trails
    • Organized Hike a Nation, a thirteen-month backpacking trip spanning 4,500 miles to increase awareness about hiking trails
    • Advocated successfully for the creation of National Park Service and Forest Service permanent staff positions and increased funding to implement the National Trails System Act
    • Created the Volunteer Vacations program in 1978 to collaborate with understaffed and under-funded government agencies to keep trails open and safe for hiking
    In the 1990s and Beyond
    • Created National Trails Day® (NTD) in 1993, the largest nationwide trails celebration that connects the general public with trails in their communities and builds community partnerships
    • Established Hike the Hill: Trails Advocacy Week in 1997 to convene trail supporters in Washington, DC to advocate for trail funding and protection
    • Launched the National Trails Fund in 1998, the only privately funded grants program dedicated to establishing, protecting and maintaining foot trails
    • Positively influenced the Forest Service’s Recreation Agenda, Bureau of Land Management's National Scenic and Historic Trails Strategy and Work Plan and other key documents affecting hiking, and promoted the creation of the House Trails Caucus and National Landscape Conservation System Congressional Caucus
    • Co-founded the Hikers for Clean Air Coalition
    • Spearheaded the creation of the Southeastern Foot Trails Coalition and announced the Great Eastern Trail, a new trail system connecting more than 10,000 miles of trail
    • Fought major threats to trails, including rollbacks of national park protections and proposals to sell public land
