General

  • Mission:
  • Lebanese American University (LAU) is committed to academic excellence, student-centeredness, the advancement of scholarship, the education of the whole person, and the formation of students as future leaders in a diverse world.

LAU’s academic degree programs provide an American education for students from around the region, preparing them for careers in arts and sciences, business, engineering and architecture, medicine, and pharmacy. LAU also engages in research and outreach programs through several specialized institutes and centers. Focusing on issues such as diplomacy and conflict transformation, peace and justice education, women’s issues, family and entrepreneurial business, migration studies, and media training, LAU’s institutes are integral to the university’s mission to promote democracy and civic engagement in the Middle East.

  • History:
  • Lebanese American University was founded by Presbyterian missionaries in 1924 as the American Junior College for Women, following nearly a century of pioneering education for girls. In 1950, under the name Beirut College for Women (BCW), the educational institution was granted a provisional charter by the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York and was authorized to award the four-year Bachelor of Arts degree and two-year Associate in Arts and Associate in Applied Science degrees. Five years later, the Board of Regents granted BCW an absolute charter, including the authority to also award the Bachelor of Science degree. As a recognized liberal arts college, BCW began playing an even more important role in serving the educational, social and economic needs of the Middle East, attracting women from across the region.

In 1973, under the name Beirut University College, the college became coeducational, and in 1995 it was renamed Lebanese American University.
