  • Mission:
  • Cara's visions is to provide a place where young people feel safe and nurtured

Cara's mission is to promote quality care and support to at risk children, young people and their families.

Our Values are Integrity, Hope, Inclusive, Respect, Empathy, Passion

  • Overview:
  • Cara Inc. is a not for profit, community service organisation who provides specialised accommodation, care and support to vulnerable young people and pregnant/parenting young women between the ages of 12 and 18 through our Residential and Home Based Care programs, when living at home is no longer an option. Cara is also the only organisation in Victoria that run a specialist home for teenage mothers and their babies. As part of our support, we offer all young women leaving Cara (when they turn 18), many who are unemployed, experiencing housing issues as well as on-going mental health issues participation in our Outreach service.
With the support of government and community partners, Cara assists young women who have suffered trauma and abuse to meet the challenges of their life. Cara has held the belief that all young women in care require unconditional love, guidance and support whilst their day to day physical, psychological and spiritual needs are met within a safe homely environment.
In addition, each young person in care has the inherent right to protection, developmental opportunities and the provision of quality services, irrespective of class, cultural background, education or religion. Cara believes that all young women deserve the opportunity to develop self-worth, self-respect and a sense of their own identity and will work towards encouraging them to develop the skills necessary to reach their individual goals and realise their potential.
Cara relies on the support of generous donations and grants to further develop our services and maintain our facilities.

  • History:
  • CARA was established in 1979 by a group of concerned individuals who saw the need to provide an alternative to institutional care. Prior to CARA, girls were removed from their homes for their own protection and placed in the remand section of Winlaton. Within this environment the girls were exposed to other young women who were offenders (often on extreme charges) and awaiting court appearances. Cara (an acronym for Christian Alternative to Remand Accommodation) was established. Since that time, Cara’s model of care has changed enormously, therefore in 2009 our new logo - a heart inside the letter ‘C’ was developed in 2009. The name Cara, now refers to the Italian meaning of the word, ‘beloved, pure, friend’, and provides a therapeutic model of care for young girls aged from 12-18 who are experiencing extreme difficulties in their lives.
