  • Mission:
  • To dynamically express the evolution of our progressive health-related work over the past 18 years, our Board recently approved a revision of our mission: “Common Ground – The Westside HIV Community Center fights HIV and associated diseases by mobilizing the passion, support, and expertise of our community.” We deliver vital health and education services to people of diverse cultural backgrounds who are living with or at-risk for HIV. We ensure that youth and adults, particularly those facing poverty, homelessness, addiction and mental illness, are able to access our services.

  • History:
  • Founded in 1992 to address the needs of those living with HIV on the Westside of Los Angeles who were unable to travel to other parts of the city for services, Common Ground – The Westside HIV Community Center is the only comprehensive HIV service organization on Los Angeles’ Westside. Our diverse team of staff, volunteers, and advocates ensure that our services are accessible to people living with HIV and/or hepatitis C, homeless persons, women of color, and at-risk youth. Our first prevention program, still going strong 17 years later, provides at-risk high school students with peer-led education to prevent HIV in their community. In 1994, the agency began partnering with Los Angeles County to provide case management for people living with HIV and preventive outreach services for homeless people. By the end of 2003, we had expanded our programs to provide an entire continuum of HIV care and prevention services, including needle exchange, mental health, treatment advocacy, targeted outreach to women and people of color, a homeless youth drop-in center, and medical care through our partnership with Venice Family Clinic. In 2010, we initiated an innovative medical intervention of “bundled testing” services for HIV, hepatitis C and STD testing and treatment, and an outpatient addiction clinic to provide counseling in conjunction with medically assisted opiate addiction treatment.
