  • Mission:
  • Akron Children's Hospital is one of the largest pediatric hospitals in the U.S..
Staff handles nearly 800,000 patient visits each year. Leading way to healthier futures for families and communities through expert medical care, research and prevention and wellness programs.
Volunteers provide a variety of services including: sitting with patients while families are away, assisting with errands and discharges, helping staff provide recreational activities for patients, provide creative distraction.

  • Overview:
  • My sixteen year old daughter, Lyndsay volunteers at Akron Children's Hospital. Volunteer services currently has a glamour cart, cookie cart and truck cart. Lyndsay and her volunteer trainer realized there was a need for a teen specific cart. Lyndsay asked if she could take the lead role in assembling donors and supplies for the cart and putting the cart in rotation. The teen specific cart will have items such as lip balm, hand lotion, playing cards, magazines, ear buds, journals, adult coloring books, stress balls, colored pencils, puzzles. The carts are used by volunteers to round to patient rooms and spend one on one time with patients. The patients are able to select a few items of the cart. The items are helpful in initiating conversation and distraction from the hospital environment. This in turn helps children feel empowered and have increased confidence in their new environment.

  • History:
  • The hospital is celebrating it's 125th anniversary this year. In 1956 the hospital initiated the Candy Striper volunteer program. In 2015, 1,483 volunteers donated nearly 120,086 hours of service.
